My new Cub (sort of)-first update

Postby Bob McCarty » Sat Dec 09, 2023 1:49 pm

I picked up a Cub "package" yesterday. A friend had disassembled this Cub and basically rebuilt or had rebuilt all the components. He then put 4 coats of 2150 on all but the TC block and rear weights. Rebuilt generator, starter, mag, engine (#4 sleeved) with new cam and crank, pistons, valves (roto-valves on the exhaust), both IH and Zenith carbs, new front and rear tires and tubes. Still sorting through the boxes. One got wet and the long rear axle and a brake drum have some surface rust on them which should be easy to remove. I need to reassemble the finals, tranny, and differential. All new bearings and gaskets. Lots of good condition used parts that he replaced too. It'll likely take me all winter and more to get it together. Health issues have kept him from working on it for years. It's a 1950, no implements.

Wow!! If you're going to buy a Cub in a basket, that's the way to do it!! Most of the stuff I buy is worn out and so rusty you can't tell what color it originally was! :{_}:

I hope it's done long before that!

Looks like a great project. I bought a basket case that was in primer several years ago and never got around to doing anything with it. I probably should gather everything up and make it a Bash project.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Some assembly required.

Who knew Ikea sold Cubs?

Good luck, keep us posted on the progress.

As the engine was on a stand, I decided to mount the bolster, front axle and front tires before removing the engine stand. I've found a few negatives. The PO painted a lot of surfaces that shouldn't have been. I had to remove paint from top and bottom of the spindles in order to get the tapered bolts to enter the holes in the spindles. He had new pipe plugs for the steering box, but the fill plug wasn't vented. Had one on hand. Yesterday a neighbor helped me mount the oil pump (backlash is .002 over spec which I think will be okay), resurfaced flywheel and new clutch. It's off the engine stand with the rear of the engine supported by an overhead chain hoist. Next will be the torque tube and moving back towards the rear end. This photo isn't real good, too much stuff in the background...
