Brake Adjustment Break

Postby capefarm » Mon Jan 15, 2024 1:20 pm

On my 1949 Cub the left brake pedal has about 1" of free play, but I found the right had about 2.5". Before I adjusted the right, I treated the clevis with penetrating oil and heated it with a torch. Able to get the nut to turn I then tried turning the clevis. Of course the rod broke and I've included an image. About 1/2" of thread remains on the brake rod. It's too cold in the unheated barn to replace the brakes altogether now, and I don't know how to weld, so is there a kind of quick fix like some sort union that would work? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A coupling nut might be just the ticket.

Threaded rod coupling nuts should be available at your local full service hardware store. Take the rod with you when looking for them.

Thank you! I just went to the hardware store where there were many coupling nuts but all were course thread. The thread on the rod is fine. Thinking about tapping mild steel.

Sorry, if I could ever figure out how to insert pictures I would have included them. However here is how I extended my break rods.

BRAKE BAND ASSEMBLY - BRAKE ROD EXTENSIONS
(Ref Group 04, Page 1 for tractor SNs 501 to 173600)

I ran into a problem after installing two new foot brake band assemblies on my 1948 FCub. The brake rod ends would not reach the left and right hand brake shaft clevises pinned to their respective shafts.

I checked the installation of the brake band assemblies and they were correct. I checked the length of the brake rods on the assemblies and compared to them to the old assemblies I was replacing and they were the same length.

I had replaced the right hand brake rod shaft assembly (NOTE: The clevis pin holes in the right and left hand brake shaft assemblies were not the same distance from a line parallel to the front edge of the floor platform.)

Because the brake rod assembly rod ends would not reach the brake rod clevises I needed to extend the brake rods.

Materials:
• 4 ea 5/16-24 hex nuts (two come from the tractor’s old brake assemblies).
• 2 ea 5/16-24 x 7/8 couplings
• 5/16-24 threaded stock to make two 5/6-24 threaded extension studs (cut from allthread or a couple of 5/16-24 cap screws that will yield lengths required).
• Existing 2-1/2” Clevises with pins
• 2 ea 3/32 x 3/4 cotter pins.

Fabrication:

1. Cut 1-1/2 “ off the threaded ends of the new left and right hand brake assembly rods.
2. Thread a jam nut on each rod end leaving 7/16” of threaded brake rod exposed.
3. Thread a 15-24 x 7/8” coupling on each brake rod end locking it to the jam nut.
4. Make two 5/16-24 brake rod studs. Because of my tractor’s brake configuration the left brake rod stud needed to be 2-1/4” long and the right brake rod stud needed to be 1-3/4” long in order to have at least 1/2” threaded penetration into the rod end clevises.
5. Thread a jam nut onto each brake rod stud.
6. Thread a stud into each coupling until it bottoms out against the end of the brake rod inside each coupling.
7. Run the stud’s jam nuts down until they lock against their respective couplings.
8. Thread a brake rod end clevis onto each rod end stud until the clevis pin holes line up with the holes in the arms of their respective brake rods and insert the pins.
9. Insert a 3/32” x ¾” cotter pin (not shown) into the end of each clevis pin and fold over.
