Local source for key stock

Postby Dale Finch » Wed May 15, 2024 7:35 am

Before I hit the road or spend lots of time on the phone, can you folks recommend a source for replacement keys for my overrunning clutch hex drive on my Woods 42 mower? It's 3/8" x 1/4" x 2". I know I can order some from Woods (about $5 ea + shipping), but was hoping there was a local source, like Lowe's or a machine shop.

I am hoping I'm just not thinking of the obvious! Thanks!

Try local hardware store.

My local hardware has 6" lengths of key stock in various sizes.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Any fastener supply house like Fastenal will have key stock in 1 foot lenghts for probably less than you'll pay for shipping from Woods. Besides that, a good hardware store should have some in stock or should be able to get it for you.

Another place to check is a welding shop in your area.

The only thing local hardware stores have is square stock. I've tried 5 hardware stores & 3 tractor/mower places, including a Woods dealer...nothing in stock.

Hadn't thought of Fastenal, and there's one about :30 away. Guess I'll call them & if no go, I'll just order a couple from German-Bliss Equipment. It just bugs me to pay $10 for 2 keys and $15-20 for shipping!
I know, I should "JUST DO IT"!! :?

Update: Fastenal only has square stock + one round stock! Oh well...

Bench, belt, disk grinder? Wouldn't take long to hand file off 1/8th inch.

From what I've heard, Fastenal is not the "walk in" store it used to be. You can't just stop in on your way by and pick something up anymore. I think they only deal with business customers now, and deliver.

Someone with a miller. Take about 10 minutes to set up and mill. Stepped key shape would take a bit linger.

I just slap the key in the vise,--grab the 4" angle grinder and go for it! Check often with mic. and you get a precise fit. Takes a little time but way cheeeeper than ordering them.

Maybe I'll go back & get the square stock at the local hardware store and do what you suggested, Sonny. They aren't very expensive, so not much lost if I mess it up.
Like you mentioned, I mostly would just like to tighten it up. It's worn just enough that it might have contributed to the breaking of the hex drive.

Do you have Motion Industries near you. If so they may have what you need.
