The shaft I am referring to is # 15 and the washer # 18. If you are referring to shaft # 5 and the two thrust washers # 6 and 7 are there and the retainer # 9 is not messed up you will need to replace both gears.

Roy, I'm real interested to see how this turns out. I did not do anything with items 5 - 10 as I was not aware that they would affect the amount of play in the steering wheel.

Roy, see if you can measure how much the shaft is moving in & out. A half turn of play would be a lot! Something's not right in that area.

Thanks Boss & Gary. I will get that measurement. I will say, when the steering gear worm was out, I reached in there with my hand and those gears are reaalllyy sloppy. Lots of movement.

Here is the measurement, as best I could get it. Marked the shaft at the top of the retainer then turned to move it up from the retainer. Measured from retainer to mark I had drawn.

John, you and I both!! I'm getting an education on this one. We replaced both bushings on the other shaft and tightened it up real good. I can't wait to see what is wrong, or what I did wrong in my ignorant bliss.

Is that .150"? If so, one of the thrust washers HAS to be missing.

I'm with Gary I think the washer is missing or has fell off. Easy to do when you are sliding the shaft in past the worm gear.

OK, Boss. Now that I know which part you are talking about, what do you mean by a "mess" in there. The seal fit snugly, nothing "jumped out at me" when I cleaned it up.

Ole John & I will be "steering" gurus by the time I get this one figure out.

Just bringing this back to the top. Had a few conversations with Boss about this problem. Well, I got a "matched set" of steering gears and steering shaft (worm) as Boss suggested. Matt is here for Christmas, so he and I put that baby together this afternoon. What a difference!!!! :{_}: :{_}: :{_}: That baby steers like a new tractor with only just a very, very little bit of loose play in the steering wheel.

Thank you one and all for your help. I hope you all have the best Christmas ever.
