Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Tom,
With Rocky not running, disengage the PTO, then turn the PTO by hand. Should turn without much effort which means the pilot bushing is dragging. If the PTO does not turn and the connection feels solid, then the clutch is not disengaging.

No, the bushing is pressed into the transmission shaft. The front of the PTO shaft is inside and supported by the bushing. A tight fit between the bushing and PTO shaft will cause the PTO shaft to turn with the transmission.

What a beautiful Cub. I've followed your restoration from the beginning and must say that I'm truly impressed with the work you have done and how well you have documented everything. I only wished that my work area was half as clean and neat as you have kept yours throughout this project. Very nice job. You should be very proud. And a very nice cause.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Thank you all for the compliments. I appreciate you all taking the time to read and offer assistance and advice in Rocky's restoration. He is turning out better than I thought he would, or could, mainly because of this site.
With the tractor off, the PTO does engage properly and when engaged will not turn by hand. When disengaged, it will turn by hand even when the tractor is in gear. It does have a slight drag on it.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Hi,
It's up to you whether or not you want to inspect the size of the PTO pilot bushing, it is the most likely reason the shaft is turning when the engine is running, and the PTO lever is in the disengaged position.
If you don't want to take it apart, you could try stopping the shaft from turning somehow, then run the engine for some time, and see if it loosens up to where the shaft quits turning. The shaft should not turn at all with the PTO lever disengaged.
Stop and check it frequently, and be sure the shaft is not getting tighter in the bushing. If it gets tighter, the bushing will need to be reamed to a bigger size.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
I got the head bolts re-torqued. Every bolt moved some, 1/8 to 1/4 turn.
Started right up, with a pony tank set-up you can see in the video.
Also, confirmed the pto bushing is tight and causing the problem by using punch to stop rotation. Not tight enough for me to go back in, though. I hope some wear and tear will loosen it up some . If not, I will try the pliers and block technique Glen mentioned, before next weekend.

Hi,
You could use a punch through the small hole in the PTO shaft to keep the shaft from turning, if it will stay in and not fall out, during the running the engine idea I said above. Then there would be no marks from a vise grip on the splines.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Rocky is running great! Stopped the PTO with a screwdriver while the tractor was stationary,
and used a bungee while driving around.
1st and reverse are kinda loud so I ordered a new idler gear today and may install before the barn dance saturday. If I do, I will go ahead and ream the bushing a little bit to stop the PTO from spinning while not engaged.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
I would like to mention that my wife and I will be joined by Bill and Jo Hudson, of Madison OH, at the Barn Dance event this Saturday.
Many of you, if not all, know Bill is a TX A&M alumni. He loves him some Aggies. ROCK, also loves A&M and has a close relationship. This affiliation along with Bill's love of these tractors, and warm weather, has convinced him that he should be here to insure Rocky gets the best representation possible.
Not only is Bill traveling to TX to attend the event, he donated a step and sign to complete Rocky's outfit. He has agreed to participate in the sale of Rocky by offering his expert advice, answering questions potential buyers may have, and mostly sharing his Cub experiences and making new friends. I look forward to hearing some his stories.
Below is a link to the online bidding for Rocky. I believe it is self explanatory.

edit by Jim Becker: fixed the link.

Tim,
Jo and I are certainly looking forward to meeting you folks and having a great time.
I would be terribly remiss if I did not thank you for your gracious hospitality and making it extremely easy to say yes when you asked us to come. (Folks, Tim rolled out the Texas hospitality carpet in a BIG way.) As I told you in one of our conversations, I was crazy for ever leaving Texas, but that ship sailed long ago.
GIG 'EM AGGIES!!!!

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Thanks for fixing the link, Jim. Not sure how I mis-copied it.
I've put a couple hours on Rocky now and currently have only two issues.
1. Transmission - First and reverse gears are still noisy, while 2nd and 3rd are not. I received an idler gear today and will go thru the effort to change if that has been know to make a difference.
My other tractor is quite in all gears.
2. Lights not working - I plan on removing paint tomorrow. Does the switch need to ground to the panel same as the ignition switch? I removed paint from the ignition switch hole as well as the light switch. Maybe I need to remove more paint from the light switch because now the ignition switch works great.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Tim, if you have power on the wires at the lights it’s a ground issue between the light housing and the hood all the way to the frame. Doesn’t take much to keep them from working after a repaint. Don’t think the switch needs to be grounded.
