Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Today could be the day....that the following excuse no longer works, "...honey, I'm not going to be able to make it to dance lessons tonight.."
So, while listening to some Blue Grass music, I plan to install the battery box, rear rock shaft and grill today Get some pictures and then focus on getting Rocky fired up.
Rocky's battery box had been updated at some point with an aluminum one. Only problem is the box had no place to mount the rear light or brackets to secure the lid,
So we got another box with the appropriate brackets, etc.
Do you all see any problems in grounding the battery this way?
There is 0 ohms of resistance from the bolt hole to the front bolster and I won't have to remove anymore paint!
Placed a liner in battery box,
Placed battery in box,

Looks great. Don't forget to prime the oil pump before the start up.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Nice work on the serial plate. I like keeping things original, so on my next restoration will be getting a decal for the original plate. Didn’t know TST had them available. Wondering if he does them for the other two style plates? Much cheaper and nicer touch to reuse the old one than buy the replacement.
As a side note, I use the aviation sealer on all paper and cork gaskets. Great product and no oil seeping as I used to get with silicone.

One more tease before start up. Can't have a tractor without a rear rockshaft!
And who wants rusty old iron bushings, when these nice, self lubing, thermoplastic ones are available,
Nice product Bill!
No worries about his lift arm rusting for a while!
...dang cotter pin has even been powder coated

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Question: The non threaded hole in the top of the differential housing, between the rear rock shaft mounting bolt holes is partially exposed. What is that used for, and should I plug it with something so it does not fill with crap. You can see it in the previous post.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
There must be different styles of rear rock shaft plates mine covers that exposed hole. What I have used on other exposed holes on my 48 was chrome plated push plugs ,they are available at most hardware stores. They give the tractor a finished off look.Your tractor sure looks good!!

It was clearance for a bolt on the hand lift. You can put a cork in it to keep stuff out.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
I agree with Shane. TM has corks http://www.tmtractor.com/new/gr/gr_001newparts.htm or your local ACE hardware and after you twist it in tight, use a single edge razor blade and trim it off flush and paint it red. Good as factory.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Hi,
Like Bob said above, I would prime the oil pump before starting the engine.
Below is a picture of where the hole is that I use for priming the oil pump. Just remove the oil filter top, and oil filter, and it is easy to see, use a light if you need to.
I fill a clean oil can with motor oil, and pump it into the hole, you might need more than one filling of the oil can to fill the passages in the engine.
Put the oil filter in, and the cover on, before starting the engine.
Watch the oil gauge after starting, it takes 15 - 20 seconds for the gauge to show pressure, it has to fill the oil filter housing before the gauge will show pressure.
After starting the engine, you will need to remove the air from the Touch Control system, and do the final filling of the unit. Below is a page from the 1949 Cub owner's manual telling how to remove the air, it is at paragraph 4, at the bottom of the page.
Fill it the last time with the arms to the rear or down position, like it says on the page.
I think you said you are using Hy-Tran fluid. The motor oil the manual says was not used anymore after they started using hydraulic fluid, Jim B. has said.

Re: R.O.C.K Restoration Project
Let me ask one more time......how do you keep it so clean and the bolts from getting chipped up/scratched when reassembling? I mean, something always gets dulled, dinged, or scratched especially reassembling bolt heads. You must be using rubber sockets and wrenches!
This work is truly impeccable.

What paint did you end up using. Son wants to pain his cub.
