1951 Cub Restoration

Postby Jim in SC » Thu Aug 20, 2015 6:59 am

Bought my Cub in 2014 from a fella in North Carolina. Didn't do much with it other than give the grandkids rides last fall because it was too hot to work on much. Noticed that the governor was frozen, the tires were shot, and it was in great need of a restoration generally. Started buying and stockpiling needed parts and materials in late fall and on New Year's Day, 2015, I drove it into the barn for the "final" time. Started tearing it down, piece by piece. I stripped each metal piece, primed it, and painted it as I went. Bought all new hoses, belts, plugs, and most of the electrical items, etc. Wow, the wiring and battery cable were in terrible shape. Anyway, I finished it up in June. Checked all my fluids one last time, and then...tried to start it...

It started on the first crank! My wife was sure it would never run again. What a lot of work, but what a lot of FUN it was!

And yeah, I know - everyone is proud of "their" Cub. Kinda like showing pictures of the grandkids or home movies (remember home movies? Talk about old head stuff...) of last summer's vacation...

So, here are a few pictures. Hope you enjoy them!

That sure looks nice. Glad this came up to the top again as I missed it before and it sure deserves a shout-out for a job well done.
