Clutch - 1940 Farmall A

I have a 1940 Farmall A with clutch issues. When I depress the clutch I have the following problems; grinding, will not depress all the way down, the clutch sticks/stops then I have to double/triple clutch to get it to engage. Every once in a while the clutch will work properly.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum. One more post and you can access the manuals at the Quick links tab (upper left corner of this page). My guess is you are probably looking at a split at the rear of the engine/bell housing for repairs. Could be TOB failure, clutch disc, pressure plate and/or any of the linkage that operates the clutch release/engage assembly. Any recent work on this assembly? Does your tractor have a PTO that might not be releasing? Did the problem happen suddenly or start over time? Good luck. Stan

No recent work has been done, and I do have a PTO. The problem has been going on for a long time. Thanks

Stan gave you the laundry list of possible problems, could be any of them. My first guess would be that lining material has come loose from the disc and the loose material is the reason for erratic behavior. You might be able to see something about what has failed by looking in through the hand hole on the bottom of the bell housing, or maybe even by removing the starter and looking in there. I think Stan is also right in that the fix will require a split at the engine/bell housing.
