new project 53 super a w woods mower

Postby getitrunning » Sun Jun 04, 2023 7:42 am

well I dragged home a new possibly basket case project yesterday, a 1953 super a that had been sitting about 3/4 yje way in a barn for probably 30 years. the mower deck, mule drive looks halfway decent but it looks like previous owner tried to run it with 2 belts instead of three but I know little to nothing about as much about these mowers and how to set up the belts. overall the tractor is in poor shape but it is complete with one good rear tire and wheel weights all around. I thought the motor was stuck when I wind he'd it on the trailer and I put it in gear for the drive home though the mountains of western North Carolina and I think the rocking back and forth on the trailer freed it up. the steering is the worst ive ever seen might need an entire steering housing and guts replacement.
there is a welded crack in steering housing about 10" long right up and over the whole gear box. might be a good thing I bought this for the mower set up and the long bar that goes from the touch control to the rear fender rocker shaft. oh did I mention there is oil leaking out of every possible place on the tractor including the finals and all through the torque tube and bell housing, everywhere.

This is from Rudi's Manuals...might be for the 59, not the 59L, but maybe it will help. (Rotation would be opposite direction):
https://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/OEM%20Implement%20and%20Attachment%20Manuals/Woods%20Mower%20Manuals/59-C-2%20Rotary%20Mower/Woods%2059-C-2%20Rotary%20Mower.htm

Better perhaps...above left QUICK LINKS>OEM Equipment and Attachment...>WOODS MOWERS>then Woos L59 at the bottom.

Hope this helps. :D

Thank you. I saw a video on YouTube and the guy showed how the belt is routed. an online belt seller has 215" kevlar belt for about $40.
first thing I noticed is this old machine needs a new pto belt pulley bearing and new seals.
first things first. I just got it off the trailer and battery cables need probably replacement but I will start with a new battery terminal. whoever had it last used I think it's #6 wire for the battery cable. if its #4 it seems very small. the carburetor and gas tank need to be cleaned and flushed. but first I thought I'd see if the starter works and if I can get spark out of distributor. and if engine will turn over. I'll pull the plugs first off and shoot some Kroil into the cylinders. if its a basket case I'm thinking I'll pull the mower and brackets , de rust and repaint it, put new bearings and seals into it and put it on my other super A with all original 6v and magneto. pictures to come. Funny thing Is when I got it there were two belts laying under it and I have a cub that someone rigged with 3 belts on a woods 59 that tractor is still on the "to do" list first off get a tube replaced on my Belarus 525 so I can lift things up with the loader. lots of work to do. anyone in east tn that wants to help out?

I would offer to help, but just checked and you're about 5 1/2 hours from me here in NC!! It IS a lot more fun (and usually more productive) to work with others! Oh well, guess you're on your own!

Have fun and good luck with all your projects! :hattip:

I had the single belt on mine, but ended up going with 3 separate belts. Got tired of it coming off if I put the tractor in reverse with the mower engaged. Either way the A-140's are awesome mowers and snow pushers.

the project cub I have has 3 belts on the woods mower. guess you got to do a lot of stretching to get those belts on that way.
anyway that tractor needs a lot of love including engine overhaul and new rear tires, tubes and rims. as soon as I find the cylinder clamp for my van Norman 944 boring bar I will get tearing into it.

Some mowers (i.e. Pennington) that use the 3 belt setup have slots for the spindle mounting to the deck, loosen the mounting bolts and slide the spindle a little to get some room, then slide it back to tighten the belts. That's the way mine works. Not sure about your Woods mower but it would be a simple modification to the deck to do it. JMHO Stan
