Oil filter o ring

Got a 71 model 140 with canister oil filter. Changed it yesterday,used wix 51172 and the oring was slightly larger diameter than the groove.
Fought it for 45 minutes ,couldn’t get it in without a wrinkle. Finally put in in freezer and it shrunk just enough to finally get it in . Also its not recessed
As deep as the old one was. Almost flush. Couldn’t compare the old one as it was deteriorated badly. The groove was perfectly clean before install . I tried slightly oiled,heavily oiled,saturated, nothing worked.
Is there a better choice on the filter or did I just get a bad one?

I’ve always had good luck with NAPA, but they both may be made by the same factory.

This may be a stupid question but did you get the old one out? I changed 2 filters on my SC and couldn't figure out why it seeped. I thought the channel was clean until I finally happened to use a pick and dug and dug and I finally got the old very very hard gasket out...I felt like an idiot

Had the same issue. the gasket was very hard and looked like metal. It took a lot of dental work to get it all out.

Yes i spent 45 minutes picking the old gasket out. Maybe i should have left it.

I guess how big of a problem it is depends on how much oversize the new o-ring is. It can help to start by centering the o-ring over the groove. Then pick two spots opposite each other and start the o-ring into the groove at those two spots. This should divide the excess up between the two sides. Then work from each of the two started points along one side at a time to get the whole ring started. Then work your way around it to continue seating it.

The new one will not be as recessed as the old one. The old one is smashed down from pressure of tightening the canister.

Before you close it up, try one more time with a good pick...it may have had TWO in there, and the bottom one is packed down. I had this with my SA! And it was 'bout hard as steel!

True all....I honestly thought the hard gasket was metal so it will fool you...and I could well be a couple of them in there where someone else was fooled. If it is clear 100% then all the gaskets I have bought fit...the groove is pretty deep in both my farmalls and they somehow straighten themselves out

Thanks for the comments. I already closed it up and it is sealed,just seemed like a pain to get the new o ring in.
I did eventually do as Jim mentioned and work each of the 4 quadrants in evenly.
Im sure i got all the old seal out,but ill double check next oil change. I had to pick and chisel the old one out.
The new one was flat,maybe slightly recessed in the groove.

Had to clean my 340 that way. last guy didnt get all of the old ring out and the new ring wouldnt set straight in the slot. After diggin the old stuff out it fit even.
Some of the rings are way too big for some reason for sure and when I get one tha fits I re-use it as long as its not leaking!--( probably shouldnt but dont have the heart to take it out and fight a oversized one.
504 on the tiller is about up for oil change and I am sure its a mess too! ---- Oil was clean when I got it and I have put many hours hard pulling on it with the KK 72" tiller runnin 6 to 8 inches deep, only had to add 1 quart so old motor might be decent on it.
