Radiator Overflow Hose Size

Postby w30bob » Tue Oct 30, 2018 9:26 pm

Hi guys,

Does anyone know the size (ID) of the radiator overflow hose? It's not called out in the parts catalog and I don't see any vendors selling it. Going to take the old one down to the auto parts store, but some size hose is only sold in closed packages.....so knowing the size would make it easier.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Well........they don't make that type of radiator overflow hose anymore (shock!), as most vehicles switched to capturing any overflow and not letting it drip on the ground. That gave them an opportunity to sell you a special formed hose that they could charge way more than just straight hose. The hose you're looking for is a thin-wall type, identified by 4 ribs running length-wise along the hose. It's reproduced for muscle cars, but is stupid expensive and has an ID that's too big for the 140 radiator. The nipple on the radiator neck that it attaches to is 5/16 OD, so a 1/4" ID hose will work. Today you'll only find thick wall hose in that size, ie mostly fuel line.......but if you can find some windshield washer hose in that size it fits a bit better because it's OD is a little bit thinner than fuel line or vacuum line. The hood on the 140 doesn't leave much room for the hose to leave the nipple on the neck and dive under the hood opening, so you'll have to fiddle with the hood fit to keep the hood edge from cutting the new hose. The original hose is 30 inches long, so prepackaged 36" hose will work.

regards,
bob

Hey Bob........thanks for the info. I'll head down to the auto parts store in a bit an see if I can find some windshield washer hose. I know Prestone makes some that's pre-packaged.

Appreciate the help!
