Farm all 140. Engine problem

Postby Clmcnaughton » Sun May 03, 2020 4:58 pm

I had a 140 Randall given to me . nothing would turn . Got it home and found a crank and turned have turn . Then I got clutch and brakes freed up . Went back to crank and pulled quarter turn and would not turn any further .I had plugs out for 3 days with WD40 and marvel oil in cyLinders . Today still can't turn ? Took valve cover off and sprayed WE 40 and marvel oil over valve rack. Checked block.and it has anti freeze in it. Any other ideas ?

Have someone depress the clutch and try turning it over again. That will help determine if it's an engine problem or if it could be a transmission issue. If it turns over with the clutch depressed but not with the clutch engaged, it's a transmission issue.

Oh, welcome aboard!! :hattip:

take the starter out and try turning backwards at the flywheel, 140 has wimpy pushrods that bend easy so be careful

Warning: just check the ring gear through the transmission cover plate below the tractor. If you see any mouse nests, you should inspect the head before proceeding. I just got one in and mice got in (through the exhaust?) and brought in acorns and other debris. As we kept turning the engine over those wimpy rods tst mentioned were bent from the debris.

Purchased a 140 a few years back. It had been left outside in the rain for many years with no muffler cover. Rain got in some of the cylinders and really rusted it solid. Ended up removing the head. Then tried turning the crank, pushed on the pistons adding every kind of penetrant. Ended up with the sleeves moving up instead of the pistons. Still need to purchase a engine kit and get it going.
