Woods L306/L59 pulley/bushing install on spindle

Postby AT140 » Sat Jun 20, 2020 6:32 pm

I have an L306 deck I use with a 140. I had to replace a spindle. I just bought a new unit rather than trying to rebuild. (May try the rebuild later tho for a spare.) I need to put the pulley and bushing on the new spindle, but for the life of me searching I can’t find anything on how to do that.

At first, I figured you just press the pulley and bushing on the spindle with your buddy’s 20 ton press. :D But that can’t be right, because then you can’t mount the spindle, which mounts underneath deck. With the pulley on, it won’t go through mounting hole.

But if you mount the spindle, I can’t figure out what you press the pulley on the spindle with? Get a big socket and just bang away until it is down far enough on the spindle? Seems like that wouldn’t be great for the deck and a lot of stress on the mounting holes.

Any help would be appreciated. My grass is getting long.

Go ahead and mount the assembly to the deck. The pulley and bushing should then go on fairly easy, with light hammer taps. When the bolts joining the pulley and bushing are tightened, it will tighten on the shaft. (they should be currently separated from each other)

Gary,

thank you, that was what I wasn’t seeing. I already mounted the bushing in the pulley. Of course, your description makes a whole lot more sense now. Should’ve asked before I mounted it. Fortunately shouldn’t be too difficult to get it off and i can try again.

Regards,
