oil filter housing gasket on 140

First oil change on the new to me 140. The parts book says there is a gasket so I get a gasket and filter from Steiner. The gasket has a square profile. I put it in place, put the housing back on taking care to center it, added oil fired it up everything was good.
I drove it around for about 10 minutes and all of a sudden there is oil everywhere. I shut is done. Got a wrench and took off the housing to reseat the seal and crank down the bolt. Proceeded to break the bolt. Got a little too aggressive with the cranking! It was easy to get the broken part out.
I do not know if the bolt had a crack in it and that was the problem. I did notice that there was no gasket in the groove when I took off the cover. So the PO has the same problem I had and tried it without a gasket, was lazy, and just did not have a gasket handy, either way it sealed.
Questions:
1) use a gasket of not on the 140? the square profile of the gasket does not make a lot of sense to me unless it was 1/2 as thick
2) put a small bead of Permatex compound in the grove instead of the gasket
3) look at the spin on filter kits for $100. I would rather not do this. The IH system could work plus I have a bunch of filters
Any suggestions on a technique?
Thank you
