Headlights?
I'm replacing the headlights for my 52 Super A. I have read enough that I have talked myself out of LED, but I do want as bright a white light as I can get. I would appreciate a recommendation. They are 4411's for a 12 volt system. Thanks in advance, Mark

Re: Headlights?
I just installed the Steiner "bulb" LED's on my SC and they work great.

Re: Headlights?
I really wanted to use LED's but had not seen good reviews. I guess if Steiner sells them that might be a pretty good testimony.

Re: Headlights?
I have had great results from LEDs. For 12 volt sealed bean you need a par 36 light. I like Larsen lights and have been using them for some time. I have purchased some lights for Steiner too. mostly the combo tail light but Larsen starting carrying a combo light
https://www.larsenlights.com/par-36-led-lights
I can cut grass at night to avoid the heat with these lights.
I think a lot of people are not happy with the 6-volt bulb options.

Re: Headlights?
I had some PAR36 sealed beams rated for 6-30V on my H. They worked just fine as long as the tractor wasn't running. With the tractor running they'd cut out in a couple minutes but would come back on if I turned them off for a minute. It was exactly the same when I switched the H from 6 to 12V.
I put those lights on my Speedex and they seemed to be fine in a rather brief test.
After some head scratching I decided the most likely cause of the problem on the H was noise from the battery ignition system. The Speedex has magneto ignition.
If you're going to go LED I would suggest getting something that is 12V only. I'm not sure you can count on the power supply in multi-volt LEDs to deal with the noise the tractor might put on the electrical system.

Re: Headlights?
Mind you that the bulbs I am talking about are just the bulbs, not a sealed beam headlight. Used them last night plowing and they worked great in spite of my crappy reflectors in the headlight

Re: Headlights?
LEDs can be impacted by electronic noise. Learned this when I put LEDs in my garage door opener. Google it and there is a great deal about garage door openers and LEDs
I had no problems with the LED bulbs I used on my two mag cubs with teardrop lights and none with the 12v sealed beam from Larsen and Steiners.
Most par36 lights I found have 9 volts min ( I have not seen 6-volt min) and are polarity sensitive so the positive ground is a problem. Also I have not tried par36 " interior" or "landscape" led lights, only automotive led lights.
There are step-up volt and polarity converters - they are on old car sites so you can run a new radio in an old 6 v positive ground car. I have thought about using that on a tractor just for the light circuit.

This is all great information. I may stick the old scchool, but try to find as white of a halogen as I can.

Re: Headlights?
I have two 12V PAR36 LED headlights from Larsen Lights on my Cub (6V, positive ground, magneto ignition) and ran a 6V-12V step up converter to power only the headlights. They are very bright and are far superior to the incandescent bulbs. They strobe when the light switch is in dim mode, so I just keep them on high. I can't imagine that whatever is going on in low is good for my system. It makes a great party effect though.

How did you take care of the polarity? Did you run two wire to the lights?

Yes. My converter is 2-wire in and 2-wire out, allowing me to reverse the headlight polarity.

Re: Headlights?
I think I would look for a 4411 equivalent in a halogen bulb. Our JD came from the factory with them on the back of the cab and they're BRIGHT.
FWIW I don't like LEDs. The light is too blue for my eyes.

Re: Headlights?
With the leds you have to look for the color temperature of "Daylight (`4000-5000 degrees) above that they get blue tint. The Larsen's I use are white in color.
The lower waste heat generated and amp savings are substantial.

I prefer the standard bulb. How much are you using the tractor at night? If it's often, I would mount a led light bar to get the brightest light available.

In July & August, I can cut grass safely at night to be out of the heat of the day.
It also saves about 10-12 amps which can help to keep your battery charging when you are plowing snow at night at moderate RPM.
