Oil level petcocks

Postby R.D.Owens » Sun Feb 28, 2021 8:33 pm

Anyone have any advice on how to remove the oil level petcocks? I would like to remove the upper petcock and replace it with one of those newfangled dipsticks that places like Steiner's sells. I can see that it just threads into a boss welded to the inside of oil plan. But how to hold it to turn it? I suppose I could just grab it with a small pipe wrench. Or is there a better way? Could I insert a rod into the hole on the underside of the petcock and lever it loose? Maybe I should have thought this through BEFORE I repainted the oil pan.

Thanks.

Richard

It just unscrews, so if you are not planning to reuse it, grab some vice grips!

You can see how it works from Steiners listing:

I am not crazy about the petcocks either, but if thats what the tractor had, then I'll keep them!

Has anyone tried the dipstick conversation and want to give feed back?

Well, I tried turning the petcock out with my biggest pair of vice grips. Made some real nice scratches on it. Tightened the vice grips as hard as I could. Just made deeper scratches. Any suggestions for plan B?

Thanks.

The fitting is just 3/8 regular pipe threads. Lefty loose to remove, counter clockwise. Maybe squirt some PB Blaster and then try or a little heat to expand. Since you already buggered it up try a pipe wrench. I will say they are easier to remove with the oil pan on the tractor. But you can do it with the pan upside down on the floor and stand on it. Good luck.

Thanks, PapaJohn. I tried several soakings with PB Blaster and a pipe wrench. Still wouldn't budge. I think I'm gonna give up on trying to replace it with the dipstick. I could try some heat, but I don't feel like painting it all over again. My own fault for not removing the petcock before I painted it.

You could type heat on the inside with a propane torch. You may just have to get it warm to break it not cherry red.

Good idea on the propane, Inairam. Thanks. And yes, I was turning counterclockwise to try to loosen, Dale.

All you have to do is drill the block and add a tube and dipstick from a 100, 200, etc. The boss for a dipstick is there.

Personally, I like the petcocks. It's an old tractor, it's supposed to have stuff like that.

Have you inspected it good to make sure it is not welded or brazed in place?

Definitely looked for signs of brazing or welding. Nothing was evident. I've given up on the dipstick idea for now. Reinstalled the oil pan, new filter and fresh oil. That was followed by some truly sweet magical sounds. But I'll start another thread with more on this adventure.

Thanks to all.
