New poster here, but I belong to a few other tractor forums. Seems like this is the place for 140 information. I have a 140 and the serial number indicates its a 1966 model. I bought it not running, but it is not locked up.
The wiring is not what it should be and I'd like to get it back so I can put the battery where it belongs and not under the seat. I'm having trouble finding a diagram and whether its a positive or negative ground. I hooked the positive to the starter and ground to the frame and the starter engages, but the key and starter button won't work so something is off. Any direction and pics would be helpful.

Re: 1966 140 battery and switch wiring
My 1969 is 12 v negative ground with the pushbutton start like this.
there should be a cable on both sides of the button switch. from the battery + to the switch. The other post is from the switch to the starter. The wires do not look that bad in the pictures. The PO must of had a reason to do what he did. You may want to check and or replace the switch before moving the battery back.
Even though it is 12 volts I still use AWG2 cable for the battery, starter ground cables. Mostly because I have it around for the 6 voters and electric golf carts.

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

The battery box was rusted out/gone. I can only assume it was easier(cheaper) to move the ground cable than to replace the box.

Re: 1966 140 battery and switch wiring
Just an update. The push button was bad. I replaced that and replaced the battery box and put the ground where it should go. It turns over fine now, but the key switch doesn't seem to turn off as the coil gets hot when in the off position. I got it to run spraying starter fluid into the carb, but it won't run otherwise. Time for a carb rebuild kit and cleaning.
