Super A won’t pick up Disk
I hate to ask, but I’m running into a big wall. Long story short, I bought this 5” Fordmac F32 disk for our new garden. It has been converted to hook up to a 3 point hitch, which My Super A has. When I hook it up, it will pick up the front gang of the disk with no problem. It won’t pick up the whole disk though. I can get it up by adjusting the top link, but when I set it down I can’t get it to pick up. Is this disk to heavy for my tractor? Am I doing something wrong when I hook it up? I’m planning on trying it one more time tomorrow and then I’m going to cut a few bolt off and pull the back gang of disks off and use the front.
Any help and advice would greatly be appreciated by a Farmall “ Newbie”
Thanks in advance,

Re: Super A won’t pick up Disk
I tried attaching pics and it said they were too large. I took four more today before it got dark and they are too large too. I’ll try something different tomorrow. Thanks anyway!

You need to reduce the size to something like 480 x 640 pixels. You can download Irfanview for free and use that to reduce picture size. It is very user friendly.

I have the same problem some times.
I text them to a friend and have him send them back to me!
Doing the text relay has worked to reduce the file size so far!

Re: Super A won’t pick up Disk
If the disk is 5' wide it may just be too heavy. I use a 4' Fast Hitch disk on mine and even with the helper spring on the FH, you can tell it's a load to pick up.
By the way, looks like you have a Super A-1 there. Check the serial number, should be above 356,000. They built somewhere around 1600-2000 of these right at the end of production in '54 before they went to the 100.

Re: Super A won’t pick up Disk
Re-size pix. in paint---only takes seconds, also some cameras have a size set in the camera---mine does and 640 x 480 is one of the choices.---its no problem to re-size pix!
On your disk, ---- even tho the SA has the power to pull 5' disk,---it wont lift it! First question I have ------- How far out behind the lift arms is the disk sitting? I am thinking WAY too far! ---- modify everything, disk and 3-pt to get disk right up to the back tires just so they dont hit and you will lift it.
convert it to a pull type is another option.
Your hitch point is probably WAY off Without pix ,--cant tell, but usually this is the problem with most 3-points and equipment. The geometry is way off on the distance. --- closer to the back tires = more lift power from the system.
Probably not the case here, but is your hydraulic system up to max condition? --- weak pump? bypass valve set too low? all could affect lift of "extra heavy" equipment such as a disk.
Dont want to set anything beyond factory pressure either or you will blow the lift piston in the box. check the rated lift capacity of your tractor, disk could be over that limit, weight wise!

Re: Super A won’t pick up Disk
Another vote for bad geometry! My OE 1 pt FH lifts a 5 ft double gang disc fine. Not very high, mind you, but high enough. Ibet your 3 pt lift arms are at least 16-18inches long, which increases the effective lift weight of your disc (leverage). Maybe convert it back to 1 pt....

Your super A does not have the helper spring like a fast hitch tractor has

Re: Super A won’t pick up Disk
Ok I think I’ve got the picture posting problem taken care of. I’m hoping to back The tractor up to the disk and snap a few pics toward the end of the week. Do these pics give y’all an idea of what I have? I REALLY APPRECIATE the feedback so far.

Super A, now you really have my curiosity up and I’m about to show y’all just how ignorant I am about my new toy.
The serial number under the seat says 357315 and then 1540. Is this the Super A-1 you were referring to? What’s different about it? Man I’m having a good time hearing what y’all have to say! Thanks again!

Yes that is a Super A-1 because the serial number is above 356,000. 1540 is engine RPM to give 540 RPM on the PTO. Here's the long story short:
Super A has 113 cu. in. engine. Super A-1 is 123.
Super A has a thermosyphon cooling system. Super A-1 has a water pump and thermostat.
Super A-1 has a taller grille due to the larger radiator. This causes your gas tank sits up higher above the hydraulic block.
Super A-1 is otherwise identical to a late Super A. IH was about to debut the Farmall 100 but apparently there was a hold-up somewhere so they built the Super A-1 for a few months towards the end of '54.
Enjoy....

Re: Super A won’t pick up Disk
a closer look at what I can see of your 3-pt.,----to lift the disk you will have to have the disk hooked right below the top lift arms----in other words your bottom arms need cut in half to suck the disk up close enough to get lifting power.

Re: Super A won’t pick up Disk
Thank you all for the great information. Here are
A couple of more pics of the three point hitch is said Super A-1! It may be easier on me to cut the back part of he disk off and drop two gangs of blades?
