International 140 Voltage Regulator

All,
Can anyone tell me the purpose of a 12v voltage regulator used on a 12v generator?

A voltage regulator keeps the voltage within a certain volt range.

Too much votage is a bad thing!

The voltage regulator controls current flow through the field coil of the generator. It increases or decreases the flow to cause the generator to charge more or less to maintain battery voltage within a given window. Someone with a more technical mind may explain in greater detail but that’s the basics of it.
