Sickle bar mower
Good evening everybody, so I managed to modify a c22 sickle bar mower to be functional on my Farmall a, wellalmost functional. It seem that I don't have enough rpm at my pto to get the cutting head up to an acceptable speed for cutting as it binds up quite quickly and won't cut. Any opinions or at vise would be highly appreciated

What size PTO pulley are you using? How about posting a photo of your setup from different angles?

The PTO on the A-140 is 540 ptos less than 1/3 the rpm of the CUB so you need to increase the circumferences of the pulley by over 3 times.
It also may be too much torque for the c-22. If the mower jams with a branch or something hopefully the pitman arm is the first toe break.

Other than the brackets that bolt it to the tractor, the rest of the C-22 is basically identical to the A-22, in fact everything from the wooden pitman to the end of the cutterbar is 100% identical. It shouldn't be an issue.
Welderman2020, Find a pulley for an A-22 mower on a Super A--140, or fabricate one. It's about 6-8" in diameter and fits a 540 PTO.

c-22 and the a-cc are basically the same? Did not know that.

As Al said, all the mounting bracketry is significantly different.

The driven pulley on an A-22 is smaller than the one on a Cub-22. Changing the drive pulley from 4 or 4-1/4 inch to one that is 6 or 8 only gets you half way there. Getting enough speed by only changing the drive pulley will require one at least 12 inches in diameter.
Then you have clearance problems for the pulley. Then the belt will be about a foot too short and possibly not heavy enough for the load (5 or 6 times the original force).

Re: Sickle bar mower
Jim makes a very good point. I had forgotten about the smaller pulley on the longitudinal driveshaft.

Re: Sickle bar mower
As I recall the driven pulley on the mule drive threads on. The PTO on the Super A turns the opposite direction, the "unscrew" direction for a Cub pulley.
Not saying you necessarily will have a problem but you MAY have a problem with the pulley unscrewing from the mule drive.
Do I still have an A mule drive at home? I just might. A couple of years ago I pieced together a complete A-22 mower from parts I'd acquired over the years, then almost as soon as I sold it, I bought another pallet of 22 mower parts at an auction for $10. I think there's an A-22 mule drive in my barn that you are welcome to if we can get it Cub Expressed. Need to clean out as I'm selling the place.
