Camshaft removal issue on C-113

Postby Debovsky » Sun Jan 30, 2022 3:06 am

Hi, I'm currently doing an "in frame" engine overhaul on my Super A engine. I want to pull out the camshaft but something is holding it somehow. I've removed the bolts holding the flange found just behind the cam gear but when I pull on the shaft, it will pull out for only half an inch and then bumps on "something" that prevent the cam to come out. I looked from below, around the crankshaft and nothing there seems it the way of anything. I even removed the hydraulic pump thinking it might have something to do with that. Nope. Then, is there a bolt holding the camshaft from behind? Say from the clutch side? I'm really puzzled with this one.

Does the engine oil pump need removed first?

Is it hitting a lifter?

if the lifters/tappets are still in the engine they will be dropping down on the lobes holding it in

I believe both of these are problems. You need to pull the oil pump and check it out (mainly flatness of the bottom cover) whether you are pulling the camshaft or not. The tappets (valve lifters) ar not really accessible with the camshaft in place. You just about need to have the engine inverted to pull the camshaft, even more so to install it. For all practical purposes, remove/replace of the camshaft is not possible with an in frame overhaul of that engine.

Why are you removing it?

The oil pump is out but it does make sense that "one" of the cam lobe is probably hitting one of the tappets. Thanks for the answer.
