Anyone used a cheap carb on A-140 ?

Postby BullDAWG » Tue Jun 28, 2022 5:06 pm

I want to one day have my original Carter carb rebuilt by a professional. I've tried and it's better but still floods when sitting for a while. I can't get old seat removed.

So, I'm thinking of getting one of those $15-$20 China carbs. Till I can go to a Cub show and get a pro to help me rebuild that old carb.

I've heard from some Cub ppl that they work good especially if you adjust the floats. Have any of y'all tried em on an A,SA,100,130,140 ?

I think you’ll find that the Chinese carbs discussed here won’t work on your Super A.

Don, are you talking about the cub carb? Or a carb made for my SA? I've looked up carbs for SA and they are different than those for a Cub but I assume they are made in China as they are priced from $15-$50 vs real zenith, Carter or marvel schebler. As the Chinese knock offs look more like a marvel. But I know it's apple to oranges just because they say they work on a cub. That's why I'm asking if you or anyone has put an el-cheepo carb on an A-140.

But they did have factory IH replacement #'s.

Do you have the eBay link for the carburetor you are considering?

Price is low enough that it is worth trying to see if it works well.

One thing I noticed...the brass 90° inlet fitting does not have the screen attached...this is what I'm talking about:

My Carter carb was missing that too. I could almost buy another carb for what Steiner's wants for that. I instead bought an inline fuel filter. Way cheaper and works on any carburetor. Just be sure to get one w/ 3/8" not 1/4" fittings. I like the plastic/clear ones so you can also SEE if fuel is flowing.

The in-line filter should have 5/16 hose nipples.

I have had no luck with that type carb. Hamilton bob has a good carb for the SA-140 but it is pricey, I have used many of them and all worked and hooked up as they should

Thanks Boss Hog,
I still want to try and see if someone with the right tools can rebuild my original Carter carb so I don't want to spend a ton on a carb UNLESS I can't get original carb working. I was just thinking an el-cheepo carb may work long enough if they can't get my Carter carb working that day. And/or till I could get an expensive replacement sent to me. Especially now as I've heard sometimes shipping can take weeks. A farmer can't wait weeks to have his equipment down.

They list a lot of models for that carburetor, models that were originally jetted differently. This one may or may not be jetted well for your engine. If you get one of them, you probably want to do as people have been doing with the Cub carburetors. Before you try to use it, open it up to set the float level and check for any repairable deficiencies you can find. You can also check jet sizes, etc. for reference if it doesn't work well.

I agree with Jim ( which is usually a safe bet) You have to be careful when people list items that say fit A-140 and this ad goes beyond that.

I purchased a rebuilt cab good for A-140 off of ebay for my 140. It came in without studs which I had to get and the carb did not run well on the 140. I got the proper Zenith carb it had studs and I guess was jetted better for the 140 and it ran much better.

The carb that Bulldog linked to has an adjustable main jet. It still may or may not work well though.

I have an elcheapo from Amazon that I put on my super a. The bowl on my originial zenith got a crack in it where there is a bolt towards the front for a jet. I had to adjust the linkage that comes from the governor to the carb so that it would work because the original setup for the zenith made it run too low of an idle. I played with the main jet and load settings and got it purring nicely. I have another zenith that is rusted and haven't had time to soda blast it to tear down and rebuild. So I got the Amazon one to get me by til I get to refurbishing the spare. Here is the link to the one I got:
