Ih 140 noise from front trans when neutrial - split coming

Postby inairam » Sun Sep 25, 2022 7:10 pm

There is noise from the front trans when my 140 is in neutral. I guess it is the front bearing /seal assembly and a split is in my future.

The parts and service manuals show the drive shaft has a connection right outside the trans instead of the long drive shaft of the cub. I have a few questions

1) Can I split at the trans / rear for the torque tube and slide the drive shaft out of the clutch or do I have to split at the engine / front of the torque tube and then remove the torque tube? Will I be able to reassemble?

2) can the bearing and seal be replaced from the outside of the trans or does it involve taking the shifter off as well?

I have done enough splits on the cubs to have a clear idea of what needs to be done. There are enough differences that I just do not have the confidence yet with the "big iron".
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
