Couple of Questions. 140

Postby lolbell » Fri Nov 18, 2022 9:42 pm

I’m in the process of changing the water pump on a ‘76 140. While at it will change all hoses and the thermostat. When I took the top hose off I was surprised at the amount of rust and gunk in the housing. The radiator doesn’t look near as bad. I want to flush the entire cooling system and wonder what would best flush to use. Other questions- while I had pretty much the entire front of the tractor off I was going to clean up what would be the “harmonic balancer” on an old Chevy to make using a timing light easier but found no degree markings. The pointer was there but no marks. What’s up with that? In my operating manual it clearly shows markings on the plate behind the pulley on the crankshaft. But after wire brushing I couldn’t find anything. How would you set ignition timing?

My first thought it that the markings are covered with paint.

I have a lot of problems seeing the timing marks on my 140s from the side. I end up taking the front cowling off and shined the light more with more of angle toward the back to see them. AS Jim said paint and grease could be hiding the markings so do clean. Also there are two different timing recommendations for the 140 depending on the SN of the engine. Both of mine are the "newer" timing. I do not know if your 1964 would fall into the early timing

As for the flush, I have never done this but "bob in CT" is very knowledgeable http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... il#p858094. he does not post that frequently anymore but he posted this about 2 years ago.

Thanks for the replies. I have the front grill, radiator, fan, water pump and all off of the tractor. I have spent a good bit of time with a wire brush on it but could have missed it. I’ll brush and look more. It’s a ‘76 model not a ’64. I will see if I can come up with some Lestoil. We have a local Ace Hardware.

Try degreaser/ cleaner first and something less aggressive than a wire brush. You do not want to damage the makings.
