Ignition Timing

Postby lolbell » Tue Nov 29, 2022 4:14 pm

I just completed a maintenance/repair project on a 1976 140. My manual gives 22 degrees BTDC @ 1400 RPM for the magneto models. All I can find is 14 degrees BTDC for the late models but it doesn’t say at what RPM. Would that be at 1400 also?

The later 140s were still listed as governed to 1,400 rpm. So I assume the 14 degrees is at 1,400 rpm, but don't know.

In my service manual for 100, 130, 140, 200, 230, 240, 404, 2404 it lists this info. The Low idle is 425 and the high idle is 1575

Make sure you read the note at the bottom. The table is in distributor degrees. You have double both for crankshaft degrees and RPM

The manual is not consistent on the gap. it lists the breaker gap on this page at 0.020 but in the "condensed service data" in the front, it lists the gap at 0.023 for all models. The SN in the manual is also the engine SN not the tractor SN

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

The page posted by inairam says the later 140 used a code AB distributor. That distributor is supposed to reach max advance at 1,400 rpn. If the tractor still has that distrbutor, it doesn't matter whether you check the timing at 1,400 or 1,575. It should be maxed out at 22 degrees either way.

The code letters should be stamped into the base of the distributor housing, near the clamp.
