12V battery size for a SAV or SA

Postby customcutter » Thu Jan 12, 2023 8:57 pm

I am trying to get my FILaw's SAV running again. I checked the ignition system and it has been converted to 12V by the PO. It has an alternator and an external coil over the Magneto. I've done a few searches and the only info I have found is that the original 6V batteries were 19L group size.

I cranked it over by hand 4-5 times this morning. Then I tried hooking up the charger to the battery dated 9/14. It's beyond dead, but I did get the starter to bump when I turned the charger up to 225 cranking amps.

I need to pick up a battery and see if I can get spark after cleaning the battery cables, terminals, and connections. I'll clean up the points on the magneto, plug wires, and inspect the plugs also when I get a chance.

A Group 26 or 26R (12V) battery should fit in the battery box designed for a 6V battery.

Don, thanks for the information. The battery box is long gone, but I may fabricate something after reading the threads about battery explosions and missing battery box tops.

The Super A battery box also provides a brace for the instrument panel. Movement of the panel affects the throttle and hydraulic settings. You want to take that into consideration when you fab up a battery holder.

Jim and Don, thanks for that info. I'll keep it in mind, once I get it up and running. I think a rear tire or tires might be a bigger issue. Both are holding air, but the left tire (from the operators seat) has a large flap that is opening up. I was looking on line a couple of nights ago and it looks like they are giving them away, LOL!
