A friend's father has a 140 he is interested in selling. I only spoke to the son today, so I know very little about it. I've scheduled next Sunday (3/19) to go look at it.
All the son could tell me was that he thinks the tank has been coated, but it runs intermittently. They've had a guy look at it in the past, but he has since passed away. I don't know the year, or what, if any implements are with it.
I'm fairly familiar with what to look for when inspecting a Cub, but not a 140. My question is, what should I look for...in other words, what is typically wrong with these 140's and what info do I need to gather to advertise it?
Of course, I know it would be good to get it running, and I will probably try to do that. Hey, it'll keep me from looking for another project of my own , and the son is a police officer that my (retired) sister worked with, and a really nice guy!

The biggest problem I usually see with a 140 is the selling price. It's always more than my buying price!

Oh yeah!! I know that's true! Just did some price checking...
Well, Tim's probably right... it's the big brother of the SA, which I'm a bit familiar with. Plus, I did help a guy a while back near me get his 140 running. And I'll know more after I check it out next Sunday.
Thanks!

The valve cover gasket leaks. Most I have seen are missing panels for the battery box. Has a water pump so look for leaks.
Parts in general are a lot more expensive than for the cub so if something is missing or broken it will be much more than the number you have in your head from the last one you did for a cub.

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Re: 140 inspection and evaluation for a friend
Just got a text from the son of the owner, and it seems the father remembered that he had already promised the tractor to someone, but since he has some memory loss, he had forgotten. I told him no problem ...we all seem to be getting there!
So, MISSION OVER.
Thanks for your input.

Ain't that the truth, mine was bad enough from the MS but now at 63 it seems a bit worse. But I still remember not to look at those green tractors
