Final drive question?

I finally got the Super A off of the trailer and started investigating the side play in the final drive axles. This morning I pulled the rear wheel weight and tire/wheel off of the left (short) side. I was able to push/pull the axle in and out about .100-.125 of an inch. Also the up/down play was probably about .020 on the outboard bearing. I was hoping the PO had not properly installed new bearings, so I dropped the pan under the bull gear to inspect the oil. It was old and extremely dark, but no metal flakes were found. So bearings weren't installed recently.

I decided to pull the square cover off of the side of the final drive at the top that covers the shaft from the transmission. There appears to be some rust on the shaft, but I found a "gap" in both the internal and external races on the bearing. It looks like it was made that way possibly for assembly purposes. I've never seen a bearing made that way but wanted to ask opinions before I start replacing "good" bearings? There's a photo below.

I've looked for manuals on the Super A in archives. It states, "A steel
spacer washer will be found between the bull gear hub and the inner bearing.
Care must be taken to see that this washer is in place upon reassembly of the
axle."

I haven't found any reference to setting "end play" or shims anywhere except in the transmission of a Super C. I've looked on YT and the internet for info and haven't found anything. (Video's are great as I am more of a visual learner.)

I'm guessing that the bearings are shot, but don't know if that would allow that much play, or if possibly the "spacer washer" is missing or how/where to shim it?

Can/should I try removing the axle shaft with the final drive assembly on the tractor? (Working in the back yard on the ground as I don't have a garage/shop floor available. I could move to the driveway, but that going to upset the HOA probably.)

I finally found this post from 2009. It sounds an awful lot like the symptoms I am having.

Also got a reply on a FB group that the gaps in the bearings are an indicator of a max-load, heavy duty bearing.

Hope this helps someone else.

I never had one apart, but in your pic it looks like ball bearings to me.

Gee, I would think they would use tapered roller bearings on axle shafts!

I know I would have made it that way!

That bearing in the above photo is the outer Differential Shaft Bearing, not the axle bearing.
