Front main oil seal: major mission creep

Postby R.D.Owens » Wed May 10, 2023 7:33 am

The front main oil seal on one of my Super AVs started leaking a while back. It was a big drag because TST had just rebuilt my leaky hydraulic pump and the tractor was otherwise running great.

Well, I figured that was a good time to strip everything down off the front, refresh, rebuild and repaint. So far I've rebuilt the fan hub, had the radiator repaired/refreshed, and rebuilt the governor. The crank pulley came off easier than I had anticipated after all the horror stories I read here or watched on Youtube. A big bearing separator and puller from Harbor Freight did the job with no drama or damage.

Looks like the crankshaft is the unthreaded type. Although there were witness marks on the shaft that showed signs of a set screw in years gone by, the pulley that I removed had no set screw.

I ordered the complete front end seal kit from Steiner. It included a seal and what seems to be sleeve for the sealing surface on the pulley.

Has anyone used the sleeve before or have any opinion about using it? The sealing surface on the pulley was pretty rough. Even after an hour of sanding (I don't have a lathe), it's still pretty rough and has a noticeable groove. I don't think I would get a good seal without using the sleeve.

If I use the sleeve would folks recommend some sort of locktite or other compound between the sleeve and pulley to keep the sleeve from spinning and to keep oil from leaking out under the sleeve?

Many thanks.

Thanks for posting the pics and procedure. Hopefully I won't have to do this.

I would recommend contacting Steiner or the kit mfg and asking them about how to install it. Good luck.

I put the pulley in the fridge to shrink it, heat the sleeve and use red locktite

Thanks, Tim. The sleeve fits pretty easy over the pulley. I'll definitely use the red locktite!

You may have the wrong sleeve/ kit for your pulley. I would measure everything before reassembly.

Does the seal fit the sleeve? Does the seal fit the pulley? You may need a different kit or at least a different sleeve.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
