I'd say it would be a little difficult for this to pick oil up.
I think the technical term for that stuff is GLOP. :D

Ok, was trying to get a magneto mounted and timed, but having issues.

Timing is similar to a Cub. Find TDC of #1 cylinder on compression stroke, orient mag pointing to #1 post on distributor cap, mount mag on tractor, turning top of mag toward engine. Rotate crank one revolution, hearing the mag trip once. Rotate top of mag out from engine...

Here’s the problem: the mag won’t trip in the range of movement; I can’t rotate it out far enough to get the second trip.

One issue could be the governor is off time. I noticed that at TDC, the governor timing notches are more like 8:30 and 2:30, instead of 8 and 2 position.

Has anyone run into this? Suggestions?

Thanks.

Stanton, I've go a paper copy of the owner's manual. Need me to look up anything? EDIT: I checked the manual, it has a couple pages on removing, service, installing and timing the magneto. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send a copy of it for you. :hattip:

EDIT: There's a section on this topic for the H-4 mag under the FARMALL B in the Owner's Manual at the pdf Manuals at Quick links tab.
EDIT 2: There's also a section on this topic in the SA Owner's Manual at the pdf Manuals at Quick links tab.

Thanks, I'll check 'em out. I have most of the paper info on this model. The Owner's Manual has a thorough section on Installing and Timing the Mag, but finishing the mag install with the second trip is where I'm having problems.

That’s the way I was leaning, Rick. Didn’t want to get into the governor at this time, but will take a look.

Problem: Mag won't trip when pulling top away from engine when trying to time it.
Suggestion: May be one tooth off.

Pulled the governor case off last evening. Here's a shot of the mag end of the drive.
IMG_0655.jpg
At TDC, mag drive is approximately at 8 and 2 o'clock.

Nope, in answer to the suggestion, the punch marks appear to line up just like the Service Manual says.
IMG_0670.jpg
Single punch lines up with double punch marks.

Just for fun, I moved the mag drive one tooth to the left.
IMG_0671.jpg
After moving 1 tooth over, drive mag drive is more at 7 and 1 o'clock.

IMG_0672.jpg
Front of mag; 1 tooth off.

Once the mag was mounted, it did trip on the second time when pulling it away from the engine, but note the mag bolt.
IMG_0674.jpg
Note the mag bolt is almost at the end of range.

So, could there be an issue with my mag? It appears the engine marks are set in time.

Suggestions??

My efforts lately have been working towards getting this engine to run, no matter how badly, just to see if it could. After seeing this governor, there'd be no way it would have worked anyway. The race bearing was totally destroyed. The governor thrust sleeve was partially damaged and non-moving and the pin on the mag/governor pinion is worn.

Three semi-random thoughts:
1) Could the camshaft be one tooth out of time? It would probably run that way, but not well.
2) Are you sure you got TDC dead on? The marks on the flywheel are not easy to see.
3) Check the condition of the impulse coupling, that the pawl is in reasonable shape and there is no damage to the drive member.

Responses to above:
  1. Can't answer #1 with front engine cover on. Am planning to have this engine checked out and possibly over-hauled, so will have to wait 'til then to find out. OR, I'll pull the front axle and remove the front cover to find out.
  2. When I see the #1 piston at TDC (on compression stroke thru the spark plug hole), the arrow mark on the flywheel (visible thru the torque tube hole) does not point straight down and the punch marks (in my photo) are just coming into line. Not dead on.
  3. Can double check, but everything appeared to be in fine working order when I over-hauled the mag.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Turn the crankshaft so the mark on the flywheel is exactly in line with the rib cast into the front flywheel cover. Then set the magneto.

Upon a suggestion from Rick Spivey, I removed the rear of the magneto and inspected the impulse coupling stop pin (#68). There was evidence of wear to the pin, which would allow the mag pawls to travel just a bit further before tripping.
DSCN1390.JPG
Pin still in place showing wear.

Pin removed with worn spot.

I pressed out the pin, turned it around and re-pressed it in place. Reassembled the mag, re-installed it on the engine and it tripped like it was supposed to when pulling the top away from the engine. Think this mystery is solved. Thanks to everyone for suggestions and help.

While waiting for parts for the governor rebuild, I decided to take a look at the throttle assembly.
Trying to get the quadrant plate off was met with resistance; sheared the bolt.
DSCN1429.jpg

Had some 5/16" diameter rod and some heavy gauge sheet metal. Cut some new threads on the rod, drilled a hole in the sheet metal and welded the rod to it:
DSCN1430.jpg

DSCN1431.jpg

Shaped the sheet metal to approximately same size as the old one and cut it to length:
DSCN1432.jpg

Some of the quadrant plate teeth were missing and worn:
DSCN1434.jpg

Cut out an opening about 1/4" wide:
DSCN1435.jpg

DSCN1436.jpg

Bent the sheet metal and cut it to length and welded it in place. Ground down the plate as smooth as I could on both sides (including total width):
DSCN1437.jpg

DSCN1439.jpg

Made my marks using masking tape and a pen:
DSCN1441.jpg

DSCN1442.jpg

Had to add weld to the throttle lever as well, then file/ground it down to a nice wedge. Not all my teeth are uniform, but when assembled, it works well:
