Road gear speed?

Postby FarmallAddict » Sat Jul 10, 2021 2:32 pm

I read that the C's are supposed to top out around 14 mph. Has anyone verified this figure? I feel like mine is 15-16 mph for some reason. I have spent a good portion of my life operating much larger tractors and I know what 20+ mph feels like on a machine. I'll have to have someone drive behind in a vehicle and see what the speedometer says. Maybe it's all in my head. My Cub downhill with a tailwind can hit 9-10mph.

It should be 10-1/4, a little different (usually higher) depending on tire size and high idle setting. 12 wouildn't be much of a stretch but any more would be.

According to tractor data dot com, pretty much the A, B, and C series tractors were 10 mph tractors stock!

Looks like the 230 got 11.7mph with the bigger tires!

Perhaps I misread it and am really misjudging the speed when I use it. It just seems faster than 10 1/4. I'll have to verify myself at some point. I have to remember this tractor is much smaller than the bigger ones I've used so everything feels faster on the C. My Cub must top out around 7mph then if I read things correct so by comparison 10-11 mph on the C seems possible.

So maybe I'm not crazy! I've been meaning to verify my C's speed but I either haven't had the time or someone wasn't available to drive the chase car. I'll make time before the summer is out to check. I believe my C has 11.2/36s on it.

Easiest way is to carry a GPS or just time it through a known distance. Probably more accurate too. A 6 minute mile = 10 MPH.

I do have a Garmin GPS I forgot about that I will try out hopefully this weekend. I don't like to download any phone apps if I can help it. It's just me being paranoid about all the software that companies sneak into apps. I realize the irony in that as I type this on my phone Google is tracking everything I do anyway.

If you have Google Maps on your phone, I believe all the GPS functions are already there.

Good idea. I totally forgot Google maps had that feature.

12.4-36 tires on my 230 (newer version of Super C), speed radar got me doing 13 even on the last tractor drive. Granted I don't know exactly how accurate it is at those low speeds.
