Finally got going on getting the 504 engine back together so I can get the tractor running for the tiller yet this year! A few pix of 2 days work.
Started with a bare block, almost have it ready for the pan and head to go on.
Whole new engine kit going in it. Box even says Red Power on it! lol!--got the kits from IH.

I see your pistons have the ih on them, are those the old pistons?
Or new ones from a old kit?

Re: IH 504 engine
New Red Power kit from IH dealer in Gibson City, Il. many years ago. Pistons have USA molded in them on the side----no chimna chit in these kits from what I can tell.
Also have a kit for the 574 motor----same deal with it! Hope to get it back together later this year too.
The 504 will fit nice inside the 72" tiller without leaving tire tracks between passes. Thats why I need it running now.

Re: IH 504 engine
Well,-----All I know is that when this tractor was new, It was owned by the state of Illinois, ( state orange paint under the red and its NOT IH primer or industrial shade). They ran side mount mowers on them around here. I would say the driver forgot to raise the mower and crashed into a concrete head wall at high speed and ripped the mower off the tractor! Even back then they had some "winners" for drivers!
Later the tractor went back to the dealer and was given a bondo job and sold to a park district to pull a 16' batwing mowing the park. THAT driver saw the oil light come on and just gave it more throttle and 30' later spun a rod bearing in the motor and bent 1 rod. (another winning driver)!
I am rebuilding the motor and plan on using the tractor on my big tiller.
Nothing will ever be mounted on the front of the tractor so the damage side wont hurt me since it will never have a loader put on it. (I only use skidloaders or crawler loaders so dont need wheel loaders).

That sounds about right. Note that two of the four mounting bolt holes are ripped out. It probably had a 110 highway mower on it. I think it should have had bolts in all four holes. If it had, it probably wouldn't have broken out.

Well, you have it torn down that far, might as well find a good torque tube too!

Re: IH 504 engine
I was thinking about taking the front housing off of my 2504 parts tractor-------- it would take a lot more time BUT if I did that, then I would have the TA unit! This one came from the factory without one. Jury still out on that idea. TA sure is nice in them, gives 10 gears instead of only 5 and for the tiller it does a better job running slow.
The 340 I am using now dont have a TA in it either and is 5 speed, but does a good job in first gear, so dont know yet.

Re: IH 504 engine
You got that ta torque tube off of that 2504 yet?
You might as well do it, (now)!
After all, you have the parts, and your tractor is already in half...... Go for it
If you dont do it now, then you will never will!

Re: IH 504 engine
2504 has loader and trencher hangin on it that has to come off first and I dont have time to do that now so motor will go in the way the tractor sits. Too many jobs came up here at the same time so now fixin is on hold!
