Little Genius?

Postby Jim in SC » Fri Dec 25, 2020 6:35 am

I've been looking for a pull behind 2 bottom plow for my '51 H for a while - I think I've found one - guy wants' $400 OBO for it, but it's missing the tail wheel. Any opinions on his asking price? Cast markings on the plow are IH PO12114. Is this a Little Genius plow?

Not sure if it's a Little Genius or not, but to me $400 seems high for a plow without a tail wheel. I think it's probably mostly useless without the wheel.

I was looking for a plow for my H last spring, and would have preferred a 2-12 Little Genius. The 2-12s are a little pricey but I could buy a 2-14 Little Genius in good condition for more like $350.

I ended up with a John Deere #52 2-14 plow in working condition for $225. I did have to cut off and replace a couple bolts to adjust the plow for the width of the H. My 44 H with a single set of weights pulls it in clay without a problem.

I agree on the missing tailwheel, but the seller says he may have it "somewhere". I'll not buy it with out a tailwheel for sure. This is the first pull plow I've seen within a reasonable distance from my place (3 hours), so I do have interest in it. I'll just have to wait and see if he can come up with the wheel. Thanks for the input.

Are you sure it's not a Little Wonder No. 4 plow? The Little Wonder plow, only had the tail wheel as an option I believe, in both the No. 3 one bottom or the No. 4 two bottom plow. Where is the PO12114 stamped on the plow?

Anyways I had a No. 8 Little Genius 2-12 plow given to me a few months back that I plan on using behind my 1940 H that I will be picking up soon. I've seen good 2 bottom plows go from $200 to $400, and I've seen someone want $400 for a parts Little Wonder No. 3 plow (I'm assuming he still has it).

PO12114 is the short beam of a Number 2 Little Wonder. The tail wheel was an option. There should be a rod from the frame to the hitch that holds the back of the plow up when it is out of the ground. If you are actually going to plow with it, a Little Genius would be a much better plow.

$400 seems high for any pull-behind plow. For that price, it seems it should have all parts in place and working. The bottoms (shares and moldboards) should be in very good condition. Wear parts for bottoms are hard to find and pricey. Going back to a plow probably made in the '30s or before may make the parts even harder to find.

Yep, I believe it is a Little Wonder, not a Little Genius. I'm just looking for a project plow, not a working plow, so this would fit my needs. It has solid wheels on rubber, not the steel spokes. The guy does still have it and it's an OBO price, so I'll let him think on it a bit before I make him an offer. That's interesting about the optional tail wheel! Thanks Jim and T-Mo for the ID. I'll post more if I actually do get it.

I looked up the PO12114 in the parts catalog without any luck, so that's why I asked where the id was stamped. But, I should have known Jim would known....I not that familiar with the plows, but I did know the Little Wonder plows had the tail wheel as an option, so that's why I asked that question. From what I can gather, the Little Wonders may be a but more scarce than the Little Genius, and are quite a bit lighter in weight and were made for light plowing.

A bit off topic but my grandfather had a list of attachments for the H but when he passed the turds came out in droves to help themselves to the equipment. I visited daily after work to put an end to it but no luck. It was very frustrating.
