Any thoughts on issue?

Postby ShawnAgne » Sun May 14, 2023 9:23 pm

Saturday fired up the 300 to pull out a shrub bush ran fine, sat for a couple hours put it away. No issues.
Went to start it up today, ran rough as hell, tried to let it run for a little bit didn't get any better, so shut it off. Would maybe act like it wanted to run for a little while but basically just sputtering. Tried starting it up later, wouldn't fire. Battery is good.

I have electronic ignition could something be wrong with that? It has ALWAYS fired up in the past, so this is very strange.

Was going to pull the plugs, clean them, drain the carb. But not sure what happened between 5pm Saturday and 3pm Sunday that it quit running smoothly.

Check for spark.

You kept the points and condenser?
I have an excuse. CRS.

I thought about converting the Super AV to electronic ignition, but after doing some research and hearing about the "failure" rate on them decided against it. So, yes they can fail.

Yeah I've had them fail before, when the power gets left on. What I'm thinking may have happened here. I checked and there is power going to the coil. Have an inline spark plug tester coming. That will let me know if I'm getting spark. I have the old coil, and the points and condenser are somewhere in the barn. Key word being "Somewhere in the barn". I have a new electronic kit coming.

Ok got my inline spark tester and there is spark going to all the plugs. I'm going to pull and clean them. See if that works, then if that doesn't I'll drain the carb and start thinking fuel issues.

could just be the carburetor too , I have had that happen lots to me , just some junk from the tank gets past the bowl . I have now been putting those plastic inline fuel filters on everything seems to never have a issue.

I really need to put updates on my post. What the issue was the copper tab on the original IH rotor in the distributor broker off. I think I'm going to contact them about waranty because after 68 years it shouldn't have worn out..... :) LOL

Modification with electronic ignition probably voided the warranty.
