B distributor and Governor

Postby arlen » Thu Mar 04, 2021 2:15 pm

When I tore my engine down, I just chucked the governor and distributor aside.
I've got some time now to clean them up and see what work they need.
What is the usual thing to watch out for on those?
Also, I would like to convert to electronic ignition. Do you typically get a whole new distributor with all the goodies inside, or do you buy parts to put in an existing distributor?
Do you have any recommendations for an electronic ignition?

The electronic unit takes the place of the points.

Arlen, is your tractor 6v. or 12 v.? 1442 is the Pertronix kit for 12v. neg. ground with suffix 6p (6v. pos. ground) or other variations. I love the 12v. set-up but the 6v. can be fussy starting. Go through the distributor and make sure the centrifugal advance is working as it should. Clean and lube it up and you should be good to go. The Pertronix will tolerate worn bushings much better than the points will, so you don't have to be as fussy about that. This is all assuming you have the battery ignition unit and not a magneto. If you have a mag., you'll have to replace the entire dist. and drive assy. There's no kit available for the mag.

Thanks!
The tractor was converted to 12V neg ground years ago. It is battery ignition--no magneto.
I just had the delco alternator rebuilt and converted to one wire self exciting.
If there are any bushing that are wore or sloppy, I will probably replace them any way.

Good, 1442 is the kit you need. I usually brouse the internet for the best price. Car Shop Inc. is usually pretty competitive and there is a place ,that sells Mustang parts, that is pretty good. Shop around, the price varies a good bit.
