I have a 1942 M that my wife's grandfather bought new in that year. We have had it for about 15 years now with the same starter on it. It was converted to 12 volts before we got it. The starter finally gave up its soul yesterday and it is time to either get it repaired or buy a remanufactured one on Yesterday's Tractor or Ebay. It is a delco remy starter Model B with a serial number of 116920. Is this the proper starter for the M? I don't see either of these numbers on the YT or ebay ads and want to make the right purchase. Thanks for any help in advance.

I have had good luck with DB Electrical starters.
Edit. 6 volt starters work and hold up well on 12 volts.

That's not a bad price for a new/rebuilt starter. I just had mine rebuilt and they charged me $50.

Re: Farmall M starter
I bought the starter from DB electrical. Great price and super fast delivery. (second day free shipping.) Installed it over the weekend and it performed flawlessly. I also replaced the 4 gauge battery cables with new bigger cables. The engine turns over faster now than it ever has in my memory. Thanks for everyone's help,
Tom

Re: Farmall M starter
New to this.. Question: My tractor is not starting she fires up but won't stay on, could this be due to my fire up numbers being wrong? Thanks

If your tractor fires but doesn't stay running, I'd bet there is an electrical switch issue. We need more info to help you though. Is it a magneto and 6-volt system or has it been converted to 12-volt with a distributed and coil? Give us some more info and we will see what we can figure out.

Re: Farmall M starter
Whole lot of information missing to diagnose the problem.
Suggest a complete engine tune up. I would start with the ignition timing. Ignition timing being way off will result in same symptoms.
If you have a separate ignition switch - only turns on/off the coil and points - then it's not likely the ignition switch.
If you have a pull lever to engage the starter - then it's not the starter.
