Turning Brankes?

Postby Chris Jones » Sat Oct 27, 2007 10:03 pm

I've been seeing some rear ends on ebay with what looks like turning brakes but I actually saw one pic of a whole tractor being sold that I can see the brakes on the rear axle but it doesn't have but one peddle--like a combo clutch brake peddle. Did they put turning brakes on the older cadets--60's 70's models. I have a bare bones 102 that I'm working on. We got it in the mid to late 70's--I think it's a 1969.

The turning brakes with two brake pedals on the right side came about on the "Super Garden Tractors" begining with the 982 and the later Cub Cadet Corp/MTD built variations. The brakes you are talking are just external disc brakes operated by the single clutch/brake pedal on the left side of the tractor.

I never seen turning brakes work until recently on my neighbors ford 8n. It can turn on a dime thats awesome.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

I remember having to use turning brakes on our old Case tri-cycle tractor in the muddy hay lot in the winter. Pretty fun when you have a big bale on the back and the front end is so light the tires barely hit the ground so steering with the front was useless.

I'd like to rig up steering brakes on a little Cub Cadet sometime just for fun.
