Possible 100 purchase

Postby JimT » Sun Oct 28, 2007 6:57 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking about buying a 100. Owner says it's a 1966. He stated that he rebuilt the engine and deck about 2 years ago. He stated that he was mowing the lawn at the new house he is buying and said he hit a piece of carpet that was down in the grass. He stated that it stopped the mower dead in it's track and shut it down. He stated that he found that the connecting rod had broken. He said he thinks that a new rod will fix the engine. He wants $200 for the cub.

Do you think it will be worth the $200 dollars and does the condition for the rod breaking sound likely?

Any responses will be appreciated. I am going to look at it on Monday.

JimT,

I don't think hitting a piece of carpet would break a connecting rod. Wouldn't really know the damage until you took the engine apart. The block could be busted up on the inside. If you only have to replace the connecting rod, $200 wouldn't be too bad. Totally up to what you want to spend. I don't have a CC 100, but alot of guys like em. The carpet bit just doesn't make any sense. Good luck!!

Cub Cadet 100s were made between 8/63 to 8/65.

Sounds like the owner used the old rod when motor was rebuild. Not a wise thing to do. Odds are it will need more than a rod to make it run again. I would plan on rebuilding the motor. My motor rebuilds will cost $250 to $350 depending on what needs done. I don't take shortcuts...I plan for my motors to last 20 plus years.

The fenders on a 100 will go for $100-$200 depending on their condiation. Headlights go for $100. Creaper will go for $250. Hydraulic system will bring $250-$300. Not sure what this 100 has....It may help make your decision.

When the rod goes it usually takes a chunk out of the bottom of the bore and sometimes the damage will be up to where the bottom ring comes down. The ones that aren't broken to bad can be used but you better round the edges to prevent it from cracking(you will have to find a good block and that most ikely will need re-bored and new piston, etc. . It can also have a 3 point hitch and a sleeve hitch, an amp meter, rear PTO and other implements besides the mower deck(it should be a cast iron end 38" or 42") which is a really good mower(the spindles are mounted in cast iron end pieces that bolt to the sheet metal. The middle spindle is also mounted in a cast iron piece but they used these on all there decks.

Don't tell too many here but I'm having the most fun with my CC70 & CC100.

Just see what options it has first. If it has a creeper/mower deck i'd jump on it. Trust me you don't get too many deals lately on cub's or cub cadets there getting higher in price lately too. I seen running smokers going for $500.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

Hi BigBill,

The owner stated that it does not have a creeper on it, but he stated that he rebuilt the deck about 2 years ago. I don't know about any other items that may be on the cadet.

I'd check it over and if its 100% all there its worth more than that in parts.
You do have a choice for parts too its either new or Ebay for parts. I'm not sure if any of our sponcers have cub cadet parts. But i think i seen an engine on "Ralph's" site for a cadet.

I started out with one gravely to use for $300, then I purchased a non runner with 3 5 gallon buckets of parts for $100. Then i traded the non runner after rebuilding it for two newer 8spd's non running. I sold one 8spd for $350 still non running. Then i purchased 10 non running gravelys from a landscaper who parked them as they broke for $50 each. I rebuilt them all and sold them too. I was dumb that was my calling in the late 70's and i sold off the rest of the parts. My point is i started with just one thats all it took. I'm up to 4 cadets now. Here we go again......

I went and looked at the cadet today. It turned out to be a 102 and not a 100. When the rod broke it damaged the block at the lower end of the cylinder bore. I checked the serial number while I was there and the owner didn't like it too much when I said it was a 102 and not a 100. He pointed at the hood and said it says 100 right on the hood. I told him someone could have changed the hood or decals. The tractor did shows signs of have been repainted at some time in the past. The serial number was 12743x. When I told him that I was going to past on this one he got up went over to the garage door opened it up and said thanks for coming by. I think he said that just to be a little polite. It gave me a bad feeling to be shuffled out of the garage just because I didn't want to by the cadet. O'well, there's more out there.

I'm going to pass. It was in pretty rough shape. The deck was bent up. There were no extra options on it either. If it would have been a 100 with the rounded fenders I would have bought it. With the project I may be doing I would have been able to sell the fenders and got some of my money back. Besides after the brush off I got I don't want to do business with the owner. I would not have treated someone like that even if they didn't want to buy something I was selling. It's their option for what ever reason.

JimT,

If the owner acted like that, even if he offered to give it to you, pass on it. People like that just burn my arse. All you were doing was correcting him for future inquiring buyers and he threw you out of his garage. I just don't understand some people. Some think they know it all. Sounds like a good pass up. There are alot more out there. Good luck on your search.

Gilles,

Once again, nice find. Even has fenders!! BTW, what happened with the Original in Indiana. Did ya get it??

Jim Not sure what the 100s have but on the originals it has a driveshaft from the motor to a gear reduction that goes into the transmission. I would think that if you put cub finals on one it would crawl but im not sure.
would be a neat slow race tractor
