2022 garden season

We had a beautiful long weekend at the farm. I fixed my cub that quit on me two weeks before. The spring on the points broke. I got my three rows of potatoes hilled up and weeded. And planted three pounds of silver queen corn. I think I ended up with 16 rows a couple hundred feet long. It might have be a little early yet but I planted a row of watermelons too. We got about an inch and a half of rain there today so things should be off to a good start. I’ll start transplanting tomatoes to the garden this coming weekend. I think I ended up with a little over 600 plants. I’ll plant about 500 in my garden and I’ll give the rest away

I put a 3-point bottom plow onto the 184 and dragged it through the garden on Friday.
Today the garden is 3" below a white blanket and it is frozen solid. That should surprise a few worms!

Today was tomato planting day in the garden. With the help of my wife and my sister we planted 72 Box Car Willy, 75 Abe Lincoln, and 92 German Johnson tomato plants. I’m going to put more stakes in the ground and start laying my drip irrigation out tomorrow. I have four more varieties with 75-100 of each still to plant. I hope to be finished early next week. I’m about a week or two later planting than the last two years. I had to contend with a late frost or two each of those years and decided I wasn’t going to do that this year. I should still have tomatoes for July 4th but I bet I don’t have my first one on June 17th like last year

The onion plants are starting to green up a bit so we didnt lose too many of them. Hard to see them in the pic. but they are there.
Too cold yet here this year to plant much, but radishes and turnips are up.
Did get a small handful of asparagus and rhubarb is a foot tall.
peach trees blooming and low 30's forecast for the next 3 nights along with high winds again!
still no taters planted here OR at the club showgrounds.

Thought about tilling up the garden, then work got in the way and then it rained. Can't win...

The apples trees look good at this point. They are budding. Hopefully no frost, but there are some cool nights in the forecast yet.

Planted some onions in the spots where some of my garlic plants died today while it was sprinkling.

The dirt was wet enough that I would not walk on it, but dry enough to crumble apart with a little scratching!

I finished planting the garden at my farm this weekend. I planted about a quarter acre of pink eye purple hull peas and about the same amount of Dixie lee peas. My silver queen corn I planted two weeks ago is popping up and looking good. The watermelons I planted two weeks ago is also popping out of the ground. I had a couple of rows left so I planted them with Hales best and rocky ford canteloupes. I finished planting tomatoes in my garden at home and ended up with 575 plants. I’m set up to irrigate the tomatoes but have to depend on Mother Nature for watering the garden at the farm. My corn got a little over an inch of rain two days after I planted and the garden got about a quarter of an inch of rain Sunday evening. The forecast is for possible showers or thunderstorms several evenings this week. I sure hope so

Still more rain here. 2.65" on Saturday afternoon and .73" this morning. Might consider building a raft instead. Springtime in the upper Midwest...

It is officially "time" to plant corn in Michigan and wouldn't you know it is back to raining.

- Guess that is what we get when the road commission finally got around to grading the roads. We had potholes, now we have holey road soup.

When I see a number like “575” tomato plants, I can scarcely imagine the labor you have ahead! Last year we had 16 tomato plants and I couldn’t give enough away. Unlike many of you, we had an ideal season last year and the tomato plants produced like crazy. We put out 12 plants on Monday, hoping for another good year. Our garden is a tiny little plot, about half for the tomato’s. My wife will plant peppers, cabbage, cucumbers and a few other things. We used to garden on a considerably larger scale, I’m really not that interested, I consider it her thing but the tomato patch is on me. Nothing taste better than a garden fresh tomato and I eat all I can while I can.

2 3/4" rain at the acreage in last 3 days. Wet, wet, and darn wet. Mud, more mud and the weeds are getting out of control.
Going to clean out the low water culverts again, this will be the 4th time in two weeks.

Neighbor tilled and hilled up his intown garden almost a month ago. He still hasn't been able to plant anything.

Edit: Raining again in the late afternoon. Weather forecast for tomorrow, rain all day.
