Water main is leaking

Well I took a week away to South Carolina, and came home today to find a puddle in the basement. I shut the water off while I was gone, but the main is leaking right at the meter...before it reaches my shutoff.
Naturally the City won't let me touch it, and with the snowstorm going right now I was told that if the basement isn't flooding out that it would have to wait until the storm ends. All of their extra hands are in plow trucks.
Funny, they never seem to plow anything well other than downtown...I usually end up doing my street with the tractor because they can't be bothered...

Dont know how it is in your area, but if I was you I would go out to the curb box in your front yard and shut it off there before I would let it leak in my basement!

Take pictures and document everything, because if something happens you want to sue them into oblivion!

I would consider a puddle in the basement to be "flooding".

A lot of homes built between 1970-1990 used polybutylene pipe for water supply with a lot of known problems. I hope your builder did not use that material.

Dont know how it is in your area, but if I was you I would go out to the curb box in your front yard and shut it off there before I would let it leak in my basement!

Naturally my shutoff tool is about 4 hours away, i lent it to an uncle to work on his own main.

No, this is a copper main thay changes to PEX inside the house. Building is 102 years old and was "professionally re-plumbed" before I moved in. I ended up fixing all of their mistakes within the first year

If I remember right I used a 1/2" drive extension upside down and a crecent wrench on a friends one time for him

At this point the shutoff is under about a foot of snow. It's their problem to fix it. Only about a cup full in the drip pan overnight.
