Calcium and rims: before picture

Postby toehead » Fri Jan 25, 2019 7:06 am

If you have calcium chloride ballast in your tires and a leak, fix it quickly. My loader cub was leaking when I picked it up, and I am finally getting to replace the tire/tube. The rim looks like this and is just trashed near the leak.

I'll weld in new metal and report back.

Here is what calcium chloride can do to your rims. This is from a Wheel Horse GT-14 that pass through my hands a year ago.

...and we wonder why our State Departments of Transportation spray the bridge decks with calcium chloride solution before every forecast snow storm, leading to rotted bridge beams and spalling concrete where the rebar rusts & expands.
...and why our vehicles are rotting out within 5 years.
...and why brake lines, exhaust systems, spring mounts, etc...
...and why independent truckers are ticked off.

I have always objected to it's use. Automakers support the use of it so the cars and trucks rust out quickly so they can sell more new ones. The manufacture and use of it should be banned. It serves no useful purpose on planet earth. ( end of rant) thanks; sonny

That is some really ugly metal cancer. I hope the fix holds up.

I hope it will. I cut it back to the point the metal was almost as thick as the base material and welded in the patches. The patch metal was the same gauge as what it was replacing.

I have had good results with the phosphoric acid rust inhibitor. First used it about 18 years ago on a propane tank. Still no rust.

Local hardware store sells it, trade name OSPHO. google search shows amazon has it also.

That's the one.

I also have tried Rustoleum "Rust reformer" (Which is a tannic acid formula) with good results.

I like to use the Rustoleum Rust Reformer primer after the OSPHO treated area is ready for paint.
