R1 or R2? Where is the stamping?
Since my rear main seal is starting to leak, I have been doing a lot of reading on the site hear about the R1 verses R2 rear main seal retainers and I am sort of just curious which one I have? Mine is an International Lo Boy 185 built in 1975. Is the casting number visible somehow with the tractor still assembled? Where would it be, on the retainer, if so?

Curiosity aside, it doesn’t really matter which one you have. They both need to be bored for the new seal. The part number is on the engine side of the retainer.

IH changed from the R1 to the R2 retainer long before your tractor was built. Unless it has been previously changed, your tractor has an R2 retainer.

I was reading here that the R2 retainer, if in good condition and measuring properly (I have the screen shots saved with the measurements), would work with the thin rubber encased seals?

Save yourself the hassle of doing the job multiple times. Send the retainer to TST for machining.
TST sends it back with a new good fitting seal. $$ well spent in my book.
