PTO spring.. where does it attach?

Postby MikeEyre74 » Wed Aug 28, 2019 9:59 am

I have checked my manual, but it does not show me the location where the PTO lever handle spring attaches on the tractor. I see where there is a small hole for a spring to attach on the PTO can, but I do not understand where the other end of the spring hooks on to?

Perfect! That’ll do. I didn’t suspect it would attach to the handle like that... I figured it held it in the engaged or disengaged positions.

Anyone have a dimension on this, roughly? I can run over to tractor supply and pick something out off the shelf instead of paying $12 for one online, and then shipping…

The one online, appears to be out of stock anyway. TSC, okay. Hope it works the same. Springs are calibrated and this one should be special. After all the serious work .. okay.. with my tractor i modified springs but it was borrowed time from eventual failure. You've done most everything and shouldn't have to worry about one spring now.

I'd measure the distance between the holes on your tractor (assuming there is no stretch in the spring) and then extrapolate off the Bates picture to get the wire gauge, length of the spring and the diameter of the coils. That would get you close when you look for a new one.... Or maybe someone can give you those measurements off their Lo-Boy.

Mozer, it appears to be just an anti-rattle spring , to hold the handle from rattling around? I can’t imagine that it is all that special?

I thought that was an odd part number for anything on a Lo-Boy. I did a little checking and sure enough, it is the spring on the pneumatic lift control valve for a Farmall A/B. That doesn't help you much except that if no one can measure one on a Lo-Boy, I might find one to measure on a pressure valve around here.

That is good. I'm 100 miles away from my 154 now and no net service there. Mike, okay nothing special but rattling around is a form of slow impact.

Measurement may not be all that precise, but here is what I have.
Overall length (outside of hooks): 2"
coiled portion length: 1 1/4
number of coils: 21 1/2 (22 on side measured for length)
wire thickness: 0.0568 (calculated, 1 1/4 divided by 22)
outside diameter: 15/32

While looking for a picture for reference, I came across this one at Home Depot. It probably isn't quite as stiff as the original, but it looks like a pretty close match.

I’m sure that’ll do just fine. I should be able to get to the store tomorrow and see what I can find over there. Thanks for the information!

Something is better than nothing in my book. Factory correct OEM comes into consideration during a complete restoration, not a worker.
