184 pto belt replacement

Postby rednax » Sun Sep 20, 2020 8:09 am

Could somebody tell me how to replace the belts connecting the engine to the pto clutch? I've already got the driveshaft removed. Can I use different belts (mtd belts) instead of the official ones? Thanks.

pdf manuals are located at the top left of the page. Click on the 3 lines at the bottom of the list I’d the manuals. You have to have 2 posts to access them.

Not to say that it won't work but pair belts usually come as a matched set.

Belt size, auto parts store. Ask for a matched set of belts, premium grade.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The belts are not a standard V belt. They are high torque heavy duty belts. If you go to all the trouble to put on new belts i would use the right ones.

I agree with Larry! When you have those belts in your hand, you will realize that they are quite different.

The belts from IH are VERY stiff (hard material) which is great for this application. It is a lot of effort to change these so I'd spend the extra dough.

Also, HamiltonBobsCubs has a tips section and their #1 tip is about these belts. Zip tie an extra set in there.

Thanks for the responses concerning the belts. Since I've already got the MTD belts I'll install them just to see how long they last. I'll zip tie the correct belts off to the side, though

IMHO, KEVLAR belts can give extended service life. Some on line sellers offer them at prices comparable to conventional belts.

I ended up buying the correct belts from hamiltonbobs. The pto brake plate was bent(who knows how it got bent).

Good decision on the belts. I bought the set from a case dealer and have been running them since 2012. My 184 does mowing duties on 3 acres. Still in good shape.
