Just purchased a 185 and trying to get it working again. Apparently used to grow moss in the woods for a while. Clutch plate had doubled in size thereby it could not be released, so a new one has been ordered.
Am needing some guidance regarding the replacement of the 1957 Cub 185 clutch plate. The plate mounting for the clutch release fingers has been loosened. It appears if the main drive shaft can be slid forward far enough, it would release the mounting plate and disc itself. Have spent 4 days getting the pin out of the drive shaft at the engine end. Also another day to loosen the shaft from the 4 bolt flange that mounts to the flywheel.
So, if there is someone out there with this experience, and, now that the shaft is loose...can you tell me if the shaft can be slid far enough forward to free the clutch disc/mounting plate or do I need to unbolt the motor to replace the clutch disc?

You might want to double check the year in case you have to get parts in the future, the 185 was made between 1974 and 1976.

I used to have a 154 that had the same clutch configuration as the 185 and it was my understanding that you had to pull the rear off in order to change the clutch. I'm by at my 184 at the moment but you should be able to slide the engine forward about and inch to get the driveshaft out and everything replaced

I have heard that the motor has to go forward to get stuff out ----- never did mine yet--still pokin along with it! lol! --- IF the motor lasts one more year I wont worry about it.

On 185 and later 154 you should be able to replace the clutch with out moving the engine forward. I replaced the disk on my 154 with out moving the engine forward. Service manual GSS1408 gives instructions. I downloaded my copy from this site. You might have to look for a little bit to find it.

Hey guys. I’ve got a 185 Loboy and it was running top notch until the other day. I was driving it and it just died! Immediately, didn’t struggle just died. Now I have no power at the dash for anything, lights, lighter, and ignition. I’m not sure if something burned up, or came loose? I’ve got it apart and I don’t see anything or wires that are loose or disconnected. Battery is fully charged and new. I’m assuming that something is wrong in the dash? I thought maybe ignition switch but that still doesn’t answer why there is no power at dash for anything. Need help?

Better check your ground wire. The connection to the seat is usually the culprit. Make sure connection is clean and shiny. A lot of people like to connect the ground wire to the transmission or frame rather than the seat.

clean all of the cables starting at battery and go up from there. Sounds like bad/dirty cables. also do you have "repair ends" on your cables?--- if so they lose contact quite often.
