How to gauge clutch wear

So I have the rear main out of the 185 and as a result the drive shaft is out.

Seems like a good time to do the clutch but it seemed fine pedal wise - but when I took the bearing housing loose it just fell to the floor (like adjusting nut was gone).

There is some chatter in N idle.

What should I look for wear wise?

If I need a clutch, do I need to drop 300 with Bobs or are some of the aftermarket Ebay kits ok?

Honestly, if is isn't broke, I wouldn't fix it. On the 154/185 I'd be more likely to replace the clutch brake buttons and the driveshaft sheer pins.

Thanks, I'm trying to live that way lol. I've had really bad cases of the "while you're at its" in the past.

Is that clutch chatter normal?

Clatter or chatter might be a loose flywheel pin or was replaced with a bolt. In neutral they make noise. Since it’s apart check it out fix it now.

Check the splines on the shaft and clutch disc, I had one of my 154’s were the spline on the shaft was wornout. The pressure plate had two broken springs.

Thanks. As I said before when I pulled the shaft the adjusting rod just fell out. I don't know if it had been adjusted all the way out or ?

BigBill has it nailed. Clutch chatter is usually worn driveshaft splines where the clutch rides. The splines should be square shaped. If they start looking like triangles where the clutch disc rides, then both the driveshaft and the clutch should be replaced.

Also, take a close look at the clutch disc. The 5 rivets that attach the center splines to the disc may be loose and allowing movement. If the center moves at all then I would replace the clutch disc. I've tried welding them (using lots of small tag welds and water to keep it from warping) and it also didn't last.

Yup my worn spline was half that thickness. I purchased the new shaft from Hamilton bobs cubs.

Time to replace the clutch, pressure plate, and driveshaft.
Driveshafts can also be resplined.

I'm looking at clutch kits - is the "rear pressure plate flywheel" typically needed? Huge price jump for that item in the kits.

I wouldn't buy the flywheel unless it was damaged or worn beyond service. In the rear flywheel, I would replace the bushing.
