154 3 point hitch

Postby nat » Fri Jul 23, 2021 9:09 pm

This is the first number series Cub I have ever owned but I'm impressed. Mine is a 73 model I think , SN is 28#### It has a 3 point hitch. The only 3 point hitch equipment is an old 6 ' angle blade. It is very heavy and I thought what better way to see than to hook it up. It lifted it with no problem and stayed up for over an hour while I had to run to town. Mine has ag tires and seems pretty solid except that the cowl piece is missing. I'm looking foward to using it to keep my driveway groomed. I'm going to Paint it after I use it a while to make sure I don't have to tear into it

That's great to hear! Did it also come with a diverter valve (selector on the tunnel)?

Got a 154 here with a 3-pt. on it too, ---- didnt get time to mess with it much other than to see the rear half of the tractor is loose when you pick up on the drawbar! You need to check that on yours too! These little guys are not designed for heavy blades and such. 6' is WAY too big for it! 4' is plenty! They are not road graders,---only can spread loose dirt so watch it and do check your rear end for slop!--- I cant find where mine is loose at but thinking frame is broke up under where you cant see with out taking a bunch of stuff off.

I have a 6' rear blade and have used it with snow and gravel. If using with the blade at an angle, (different than 90 degrees) a fully loaded blade will drag the front end of the lowboy instead of moving the load off to the side. (perhaps weight can be added to help)

I have since purchased a front IH-54 snow blade for snow use. It works better than the rear blade.

My frame was broke under the seat, right above where the frame is cut out to accommodate the rear end. This is probably the weakest point on the frame. I just welded it with the stick welder and it has been holding out. I figured if it breaks again, I'll do some better patch work.

There were some changes to the frame in that area when the 185 and 184 came to market. The area you are indicating is a known weak point and prone to cracking. Also, check out the frame to final drive mounts. Make sure those bolts are tight. They have a habit of loosening and wallowing the frame holes.

Weld it and double it. Box it in if you really want to make it strong.

Weld it then fish plate over the weld to connect both sides of the crack.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
