New user here, Questions about a IH 184.

Postby Metricquartz » Fri Aug 06, 2021 6:57 am

A neighbor has an old IH 184 that I am trying to get, it has been sitting outside exposed to the weather for many many years parked under some pine trees. I wanted to ask you folks what I should look for because I would like to get it from them and bring it back to life and use it.
There is still gas in the tank that I seen and the radiator looks dirty and empty. Also what should I offer? Thanks

Welcome.

Consider it a parts tractor, worth perhaps $400-.

My opinion. Forget it. Purchase a running/working tractor.

Is there any chance of getting this a running unit?

There's always a chance it will run as long as the exhaust is intact and the engine isn't full of water.

Yes, there is always a chance. But, you need to consider that there is a reason the tractor been sitting for years.

Post close up photos of the tractor. All sides with different angles. We will provide opinions. We have nothing to base an opinion on other than it's been sitting for years.

Search this site for posts on the cost of new tires and tubes, engine, and other work.

Welcome from the Thumb side of the Mitten state.

Hopefully it comes with an implement or two.
I like to do the reverse math. A good running, decent condition 184 with a mower deck brings about $2500 in Mi.
Subtract the cost of items you will likely need to get this thing into that condition.

Engine doesn't run? Engine rebuild subtract $500 (Ricky's Price)
Radiator Empty? Assume the worst and subtract a radiator. $400
Tune Up (Points, Distributor Cap & Rotor, Plugs, Wires, Belts, Fluids Subtract $250
No mower deck? Subtract $400
No Snow Plow? Subtract $350

Ricky Racer did a cost breakdown of a Cub engine rebuild and he is in your neighborhood.
I've never seen lower prices for the work he got done. Evidently he is a great shopper!

Sorry about the late response but I was away far away for a over a week in Brazil on business, Here are some photos of the unit. It seems to me that it will clean up nicely.

All the pictures tell is that it's cosmetically poor but the grille appears to be in decent shape, which is rare. Can't really tell about the tires but if it needs them they are an expensive item.

Outdoors4ever is a 184 guy and his advice is pretty good (although $500 for engine rebuild seems low). I think there also should be some subtraction for the poor cosmetics.

If I were considering it I'd assume it will never run and value it based on my pleasure in messing with it and what I could get selling parts off it. Odds are pretty good that by the time it's a good running tractor it'll cost you more than buying one someone else fixed up.

Pass. Don't buy it. Purchase a tractor in work ready condition.

This is an unmolested 184. Do you have pictures of the tunnel and seat? Any pictures of the rear of the tractor?
I will agree that $500 seems low for a rebuild, but this is not my number. Just passing along info from another member.

So here is what I see from the pictures:
It is missing the right side panel covering the clutch - though now we can see that all the parts are there. Perhaps this is why the tractor was parked?
Gas tank & water separator bowl needs removed and cleaned out.
Carb is probably in similar condition - will need to be removed and cleaned out.
Coolant is not visible so it is low or leaking. Need to find the leak (internal or external)
There is an oil leak near the distributor drive.
Need to replace the coil to distributor wire. The jacketing is cracked in several places
Left brake pedal is riding low. This might be a broken spring under the foot rest, but may be something more.
The light switch is in the "on" position. Something is fishy with its mounting.

Plan on replacing the points, battery, clean or replace the fuses & fuse holders on the dash, changing all fluids, and spending a lot of quality time with a power washer.

Check to see if the engine will move (turn the flywheel by hand). Should be able to turn. I'd walk away if it is stuck and doesn't turn by hand.

I wouldn't offer more than $1000 for a non-running tractor. Most on this forum would only pay scrap price for a non-runner.

What's with the 8th picture? Are the implements included in the sale?

I would be more interested in the mower than the tractor.

More photos.

The only implement is that 3 gang reel mower and the woods belly mower.
The information is very useful, Thank you .
What I find so unbelievable is that back in 1979 that this little cub cost more than a new car.

Looks like a $800-$900 tractor to me. Has no creeper or 3-point. It does have the combination rear light that needs to be plugged in.
Definitely order a new (less flamey) gas cap. (Free)
