184 Mower Question

Postby Kyle Delong » Tue Jun 21, 2022 1:01 pm

Hi all, new to the lo boy series. I’m looking at a really nice 184. Comes with snow plow and mower deck. Wanting to use it help mow pastures up to 10 inches tall. Will this tractor be capable of doing that? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

How much pasture and type of grass? Might be satisfactory. Probably not. Problem non-standard PTO. Implements fitting the Numbered Cubs tend to be expensive and hard to find.

If you asked about mowing lawns, I would have said go for it.

My guess, need a bigger tractor. Actually recommend a bigger tractor with hydraulics, standard PTO, and 3 point. A tractor you can find implements for at local auctions or the big box farm stores.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I agree 90% with ya Eugene,

The only place I differ is I luv my Super A. I'd recommend an SA, 100, 130, 140.

I converted a bushog to fit drawbar. Have used it to even cut down 4"-5" trees. You can find sicklebar mower for SA-140's. Can also find hay rakes or ground driven hay side rakes. They also can have 3pt hitch added and PTO is standard 540 RPM. The only thing I'd say get a bigger/higher HP tractor would be if Kyle needed to bail hay and move em, but now you're talkin $40-60k just for the tractor and that much for almost each implements (hay ain't cheap no more).

Give me $20k n I'll hook ya up with a super nice hay setup and a new to me SA for the finders fee. J/K 8)

i used mine to mow a work out area, probably less the an acre that was in a horse pasture. grass/weeds etc in some area where hood height. first gear with mower deck in raised position. Came back a week or so later to recut it in the lowered position. definitely worked it flat out but these are tough old tractors.

Which mower did the tractor come with? Something 60" wide or something 48" wide?
The 60" mowers are more of a finish mower, but will beat on some taller weeds. Making 10" weeds into 5" weeds would probably be just fine.
The 48" mowers (1 blade) are definitely meant to do the job you are asking about.
