International 184

Postby treeman53 » Sat May 13, 2023 10:02 am

Lost my manual, so I have what may be a stupid question (or two). Is the governor spring tension adjustable on the 184? I can't get enough rpm's right now, and adjusting the governor isn't doing it. Seems as though the governor is keeping rpm's down, no matter how I adjust it, so I am assumimg spring is not putting up enough resistance. Can it be adjusted, or is it necessary to get a new spring? Or, am I looking at it wrong somehow?

The things to check are: throttle cable, is it pulling the governor lever all the way, and not slipping? Go through the governor linkage set-up, according to the manual. Just look in any Cub manual, in the manuals section, the governor never changed. Have you backed off the stop screw? When you’ve done these checks and adjustments with no improvement, then replace the spring.

Throttle cable clamps slips on my 154. About once a mowing season I have to readjust, reclamp.

Two adjustments; throttle cable correctly located in the clamp and cable wire to governor wire clamp. Either adjustment off will limit throttle response.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Make certain that the governor to Carb rockshaft is well lubricated and adjusted properly. I had the same issue and found that the keyway at the governor rockshaft had worn and had become sloppy. I removed the rockshaft, replaced the keyway, and used some JB Weld to take up the slack upon reassembly.

Yes, I failed to mention that. If there is slop in that woodruff key, you need to address that prior to adjusting the governor rod.
